Steering rack leak 200

The steering rack is leaking on my 1990 245. It was replaced last year with a rebuilt unit. The leak is at the drivers side boot which has a small tear about 14" long. Would replacing the boot solve the problem or has a seal inside the rack failed. It would seem that if the boot were intact the leak would not have occurred.

Is it cv grease coming out of the boot, or is it ATF? IF it is just a little grease coming out you can just replace the boot. If ATF/power steering fluid is coming out then the rack seals are leaking. The boots are primarily for keeping dirt out, they should also contain some amount of cv joint grease for inner tie rod lubrication.

That should read a tear 1/4" long not 14" long! :-)

The boots are to keep gunk from getting up into the rack, not to keep fluid in, at least that is what was explained to me when I wanted to get new boots for my leaking rack on my recently acquired 86 245.

Thanks to advice from here on the board, I used some Lucas power steering stop leak on and it stopped all the leaking, the fluid has been stable since.

Now I'm crossing fingers the rear main seal leak will be stopped by the STP trick also read about here.

Also, since the rack is only a year old, is warrantly left on it from the rebuilder? Good luck, I'm sure better advice will be forthcoming from the more knowledgeable here.
