Radio Suppression Relay, Frequent Problem? 900 1995

I have had two cars which had a problem with this relay. It is black, usually on the passenger side by the anti-freeze expansion tank. The part number is 1323592-1.

A 740 had poor acceleration and hard cold weather starting here in Minnesota. The problem did not change with a L-engine out of a 1993 940 (non-turbo). Changing the relay made a huge difference in both acceleration and cold weather starting. The reason I put in an L-engine is because the old K-engine froze with a broken intake valve. I have always wondered whether the relay, which supplies a ground to the fuel injection, could have had high resistance contacts leading to the injectors not injecting a rich enough mixture so the engine ran lean? Any comments on the broken intake valve and if the relay could cause this?

The second case of this relay going bad was fixed two nights ago. My 1995 940 (non-turbo) with 69K miles had poor acceleration and would surge slightly running steady. I thought the problem could be related to the years in storage even though I started it periodically and had a full tank of gas with stabilizer. I changed fuel filter, cleaned the IAC and throttle bottle, checked fuel pressure and volume and could not find anything wrong. Then I changed the relay and again, it was like a different car.

I am writing this post to possibly help out anyone that has similar problems with poor acceleration, etc. The brickboard has certainly been a great resource to me for years!

Radio Suppression Relay, Frequent Problem? 900 1995

I have has similar, intermittent problems with this relay on my 91 940SE. This is interesting, because yours is the first post I have seen relating to this type of issue with this relay. What brand and source was your replacement?

I replaced the relay with a Volvo relay out of an 89 740. Since my post, I took the relay cover off the relay causing the problem. There was a little icicle (a skinny growth on the contact) which measured no resistance on my ohmmeter (very low current) when the contacts were closed but the contact area (the icicle) was so small in diameter that with only a few milli-amps I am sure it would drop considerable voltage and the resultant current to the fuel injectors would be reduced (ohms law says current=voltage/resistance) since the circuit resistance would be increased.
