Driver's side seat retrofit for tall guys??? Seat extenders. 200 1988

Okay. Here comes a weird question. Is there any kind of aftermarket retrofit for the 240 front driver's seat to make the seat slide a bit further back. I am 6'6" and would love an extra 1.5" or so. Would make a huge difference in comfort. Many years ago in 1977 I bought a beautiful yellow Toyota Celica and the dealership had a supply of heavy steel bars fabricated to bolt into the actual seat holes in the floor and then the seat bolted onto that bar. It only raised the seat about a 1/2 inch, but gave me the extra leg room I needed. Does Volvo or anyone know of anything like that? If so where? I just know there have to be tall guys like me who love their 240s.

    Yes! There were extenders (dealer installed accessory) -- I had them .... 200 1988

    Yes, there were extenders -- they repositioned the seats back about 3 inches!

    Years ago, when I bought my '84 240 (still have it) in 1987, I found that the seats couldn't move as close forward (I'm short) as all my other 240s. So when I got home with it, I dismounted the seats (as I always do, because I like to have the passenger seat repositioned to the highest spot, like I do with the drivers seat).

    Well, when I took off the seats, I discovered that there was a strange new piece that I had never seen before. These were metal bars, about 2 ft long (maybe 1.5 inches wide), with appropriate holes for bolting to the regular seat mounts (just as the seat bottoms had) as well as bolts sticking up (just as the regular seat mounts have) to be bolted to the seats. In other words, these bars mounted between the seats and the mounts, but transposed their positions by about 3 inches so that the seats would be positioned three inches further back. And the bars allowed the full range of fore-aft seat adjustment.

    The bars were mounted in the aft-most mounted position (using the mounts limited range), so these really moved the seats back about 5 inches altogether.

    I didn't find any parts nos. stamped on the pieces, but they looked professionally done, not something an amateur would cobble together -- the bolts, for example, were neatly welded (and finished) so that it appeared one-piece.

    Naturally, though, I threw them away as scrap, not needing them. Sorry about that. But you might ask some dealer's parts manager who seems that he might be old enough to remember when they were available.

    you can try removing the height adjustment. that will lower the seat slightly.

        This question was asked years ago. not sure how that worked out.

        You probably can do the same as the Celica. If you take the seat of the Sliding part of the seat bracket, you are left with 4 studs sticking up, I cannot see why you can't take two pieces of flat Stock , drill holes in it and bolt it to those and then drill more holes further back to set the seat on.

        You did use the Back Adjuster to set the back of teh seat as low as it goes?
        There is a front and back adjustment on the Drivers seat.

          Word on the 'board was that there are already extra holes in the seat brackets to move the seat back an inch or two. I know I heard that, but I've never confirmed while I've had the seat out. I would just take one out and sit down with a cold glass of tea looking at the bottom - something will come to you on how to solve the problem.

                Well, not having the extenders and with the seat already in its furthest back setting using the extra set of holes, I was still cramped. So, after reading some old post from several years back, I took the slider mechanism off the seat, and drilled (3/16 bit so to be smaller than the ball bearing) out the indentation stops toward the back end of the slide rail. I also ground down the raised stops that are near the rear end of the actual slide on both sides of said slide. The ball bearing still will not come out and will function adequately. When I put the seat back in and slid it back, all the notches are now accessible and I have 2 1/2 to 3 inches extra leg room. Wow. I really worked it back and forth while sitting in there to be sure. It works and is so much more enjoyable. Before I drilled those indentation stops out I really worked it back and forth to be sure I was drilling the right spot. After drilling the first rail and pushing the slide back in (while holding the adjustment bar up at the same time so it WOULD slide) toward the front and comparing that one with the undrilled side, I knew I was on the money and went ahead and drilled the other rail. Now, combining that with lowering the rear of the seat with the rear seat adjustment, I was very comfortable. My guess is that those stops were put there to allow more leg room for rear seat passengers. I will rarely have that and I will be the main driver. No issue. I am comfortable. My knees no longer feel jammed against the center console. I have plenty of headroom and it is actually easier to get in and out of the car. Sweet. 6'6'' and happy. This Brickboard wins again. Over and over. Guys, I went many months of messing around with books, and manuals and bad advice from so-called mechanics who knew nothing much about 240s and when I FINALLY got in the habit of relying on this Brickboard for answers, the answers came. Aw garsh, I'm getting right misty eyed when I think of it. Actually, I am very grateful for your help, and I have saved a ton of money. This board ought to be required for any Volvo owner who loves their car and loves to keep it going without relying on local dealers and mechanics. Thanks!!! jg
