The moan from my power steering cured!!!!!! 200 1986

I recently replaced my leaking rack with a new one along with the three hoses. Even after bleeding the system, I'd have a moan at parking lot speeds when turning the steering wheel. Looking in the archives, I found a thread from mmaldin from back in 2004 that mentioned the weights that are attached to the high pressure hose that I remember throwing away when I replaced that hose. Thinking it was not necessary since the new hose didn't have one nor mentioning it should be replaced, I pitched it. I went to the boneyard yesterday and got one. It was larger in internal diameter than the OD of the hose, so after some grinding and a little work with the hammer, it fit and now works perfectly.

Thanks.

The moan from my power steering cured!!!!!! 200 1986

Hi Bob,

That reminds me of a learning experience I had. It was my first 86+ 240. I saw that weight on my high pressure hose and took it for a splice. Thinking it goofy to splice a hydraulic hose with that much pressure behind it, I cruised the yards for another hose.

Seems like I found 2 or 3 "spliced" hoses (surprise!) like mine before I found one without the weight; swapped them and went blissfully ignorant of its function until I pulled apart the old one some time afterwards. But I never did hear any vibration or moan from that car to raise my suspicions...

Never had to play in this area.....Why the weights, to keep the hose from chattering under strain? They are on the hose?

Under the high pressures when turning the wheel, the hose can start resonating (vibrating). That is the noise you can hear. The weights prevent the resonating ..or at least cuts it way down. They are just 2 half circles of lead a few inches long and you sandwich the hose between them and clamp it down.

It was placed about 3" below the top of where the hose comes off of the pump.
I was surprised the the new replacement hose was not as fat as the OEM one though to allow the weight to fit properly on the first try.
