Stranded on road trip! No start, no turn over, no clicking, full battery 200 1989

Hi brickboarders, bear with me as I am entering this from my cell phone. My car won't start. Battery is full of juice. I cleaned the terminals, checked the 20 amp fuse and all the fuses in the cabin. The car acts like I am not even turning. The ignition (I'm thinking the ignition switch.) It doesn't try to turn over, the solanoid doesn't click. My GPS powers up fine, the lights and radio allwork. Despit this we even tried to jump it, nothing. I checked the wiring to the starter and it looks ok, I'm trying to get an electric meter.thinking the ignitionsmitch or the park/neutral switch in the shifter. I tried starting while moving the shifter around, nothing. Is there any way to get around the ignition switch for a temp fix? Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

Stranded Ryan

I am going to guess the neutral safety switch peg on the base of the shifter has disengaged from the switch. Move the bristles and have a look, it is easily reengaged if need be.

      Hey Robert,

This is "Stranded Ryan" signing in from my brickboard account. It turns out you were right. The shifter must have gotten bumped as we were loading things into the car. It started fine right after that because it was still in the Park position. Once I moved the shifter to Drive the shifter switch was separated left in the Drive position preventing the car from starting.

      Thanks for your help,

It may be a sticking solenoid hit the top of the solenoid with a stick then try to start. Dan

      Agree with pageda,

Get a 12 inch stick and give that solenoid a good thumping. Move the shifter back and forth firmly a couple of times and try it.

You can also do the thumping while someone tries the ignition. Can be therapeutic when you are stressed out if nothing else.

If you have a VOM measure the blue/yellow wire to chassis when someone tries the key. Should have 12 Volts when the key goes to III and drop out when moved back to II.

If you do not have 12 volts you are headed to the Ignition switch and the wiring diagram from the other post. Hope you were able to read that on the phone.

Another cause already mentioned is the Neutral Safety switch wiring. Fastest way to find it is to pull the side panel on the drivers side of the center console. Look for a two wire connector with blue wires on it. Pull it apart and jumper the connector that heads up into the dash wiring. Try that and if it does start you have an issue with the big switch in the shifter. It that does nothing the wire from the battery should, but make that one of the last things you try.

Good Luck and hope it all goes better for you today.

      Regards,

      Paul

You have my full sympathy, Ryan. I do not know if this will be of any help or if you can read it at all from your cell phone, but here is the starter motor circuit as it is supposed to work (borrowed from vlvworld.com):

All the best and good luck,

    Ryan,

Sorry to hear about you getting stranded. From what you've described, you seem to be getting power to the ignition switch. My guess is you have an open between the ignition switch and starter solenoid. If you can, carefully touch the terminal on the starter solenoid with the blue/yellow wire to positive with the ignition key on. Hopefully it should start. If there is a problem with the ignition switch, neutral safety switch or the wiring, this will temporarily bypass them. A volt ohm meter would be a helpful tool in diagnosing the open connection.

A big Thank You to all those who have offered help. I had to leave the car in a safe place for a few days to continue on a canoe trip down the Colorado River to celebrate a friend's "bachelor party." Now that I have returned I was able to get the car started by touching the positive terminal of the battery to the blue/yellow wire connection. This allowed me to get the car home safely and now I can begin to troubleshoot the actual problem. (I have to say it feels pretty cool to hot-wire a car, even if it is your own.) Any further tips or tricks are always appreciated. My brickboard name is CineMan, but I was not able to log in to my account from my cell phone.

      Thanks Again,

      Stranded Ryan
