Bolt sizes in B20 head? 120-130

Hey all,

Quick one for you.... You know that small plate that covers the opening in the front passenger side of a B20 head (I forget at the moment whether its a E or F, and in either case it was reworked), right next to the exhaust port for cylinder #1? Any idea what size bolts it uses? My "new" head had neither the plate nor bolts, so I find myself needing to cobble something together (old head was a B18D and uses a different size plate and bolts).

Making a new plate is no big deal since I have the correct gasket to use as a template, so its just a matter of finding correct bolts. They seem to be 12-24, but my 12-24 tap feels awful loose in the hole. M6x1 is fairly close in size and pitch, but won't even start in the hole. In either case I have neither 12-24 nor M6x1 bolts to use, so figured I'd ask here before picking them up.

On a similar note, how about the bolt holes for the injectors? I have similar plans for making plates to cover the ports, but haven't gotten that far yet.

Oh, and any idea what that port in front is for?

Thanks!

-aric.

    It's for.... 120-130

The port in the early heads is used for the rare oil coolers sandwiched under the filter. It was a water connection for the oil-water heat exchanger. I've only seen one in all my years, and I removed it for the customer.

      Hello,

As stated, the hole in the head for the carburated heads was for a coolant stabilized oil cooler.

On the D-jet fuel injected heads, the hole in the same area is for a part called an auxiliary air slide and the small threaded hole next to it was for the coolant temperature sensor for the fuel injection.

1/4" UNC & 5/16" UNC. The only odd thread is the D-Jet temp sensor hole, but you can plug it with an NPT plug.

      Hello,

The water temperature sensor for D-jet is not NPT, it is a metric straight thread.

I use a metric allen bolt and the alumninum sealing washer that comes in the head gasket set as a plug.

Also it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you use thread chasing tools to clean threads and not a tap or die.

Taps and dies are for cutting threads and believe it or not the angle and depth of threads are not set in stone, so when you use a tap or die you could be cutting the threads, possibly making them too loose to hold proper torques in critical situations.

Metric straight thread? What size? I tried all the common ones (i.e. everything close in my metric tap set), but none fit. The 1/8" NPT was a perfect match. Perhaps sometime in its life someone converted it to the different thread? Who knows....

        -aric.

EDIT- one of the metric was close (I forget which at the moment), but given the wobble it had it seemed that the hole have had tapered threads, so I tried the NPT.

I know it's not NPT, but a NPT pipe plug jams in nicely.

Nobody has thread chasing tools. If a lightly lubed bolt doesn't screw in by hand, then you run a tap down it. Thread chasing tools are pedantic in the extreme.

          Hello,

If you think I am pedantic, you should talk to my brother!

BTW, Snap-On thread cleaning kit, part number RTD48, has thread chasers for US fine and coarse threads 1/4"-9/16", and chasers for the most common metric threads 6mm-12mm for less than $95.00.

The kit includes chasers for inside and outside threads, special thread repairing files with plastic slip on handles for both US and metric threads, all in a nice plastic case.

I think a great investment for any serious DIYer, especially when dealing with older cars.

The only problem with the kit is that it does not have a long enough chaser to get all the way down into the head bolt holes, so I modified the ones I need from these chasers.

You can use 7/8" freeze plugs to cover the injector holes. IPD markets and sells them for this purpose. If you go this route then you will not have to place a fastener in the threaded hole, unless you want to, for looks.
