Too Tall Trailer Towing? 200

Do you think a 245/B21/M46 can successfully haul a small cargo trailer, such as an enclosed 5'X8' box trailer? How about an enclosed 6'X10' box trailer? We're thinking of a load of household furnishings, nothing too heavy, so the wind resistance of the box itself may be the biggest issue. Any suggestions from experience would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for all helpful advice!

    I've done a really heavy U-Haul ... 200

You haven't told us how far, and what terrain (e.g., mountains or flatland) -- this is important.

I regularly tow my smaller boats (up to a 2300 lb boat with 700 lb trailer) without a problem (I only use my SUV for my biggest boat). But the biggest thing I ever towed with my 240s was a tandem (2-axle) box U-Haul, to take my daughter's belongings to college, from New Jersey to Cambridge, MA. It was really loaded up, and there were a *lot* of hills on that trip (NJ, CT, and MA are all hilly on the route I took)! The car was a 1984 B23 with automatic -- synthetic ATF and a Volvo ATF auxiliary cooler, as well as Nissen 3-row radiator, though -- no problems whatsoever, but as you can imagine, I locked out OD (drove in 3rd gear) a lot on the uphill sides of the mountainous portions of the trip. Your manual transmission should do better, though.

Absolutely! I towed an 86 244 on a car dolly with the 245 pictured here from Western Kentucky back to Charlotte, NC and several other larger cars around North Carolina. I tow my boat all of the time. You should pick up a Hayden oil cooler for the tranny to help dissipate the heat, but it is not neccessary.

Around the corner or across the country? If the latter - it would be good to make sure all running gear (brakes, shocks, wheel bearings) are in good shape, as well as the cooling system. Maybe fresh gearbox oil as well if you haven't done that in a while. Chances are, on any but completely flat terrain you won't be engaging OD 4th too often!

I did 4k miles from Iowa to Alaska with an enclosed trailer somewhere between those dimensions. '90 245 B230F AW70. If you're not in a rush to get there, you should be fine. How long of a drive?

Too Tall Trailer Towing? Tanks! 200

      All good and encouraging advice!

One trip we're thinking of is a retrieval of student household goods from central Florida to Texas. All nostalgia for old couches aside, I've already begun advancing the idea of leaving as much there as possible. Student furnishings seem to tolerate serial adoption pretty well. So trailer size is still in the 5'X8' to 6'X10' range. As I expect to be the packing and unpacking crew, I'm leaning toward the larger box as I can already hear my back complaining about crawling into the smaller. I expect that my wagon would prefer the reverse. And there would be no rushing either direction--my wagon has long ago taught me the patience of the right-lane traveler.

I do have the M46 manual transmission, and I guess a transmission cooler is more of an option for an automatic. I already have a three-row radiator and an auxiliary fan that I added for my AC revival. But what about an oil cooler for the engine? I have seen oil coolers on turbos retired to the boneyard. The heat exchanger itself would have to go to a different location than on the turbo, but I could probably manage that. The connection at the oil filter seems pretty straightforward. What do you think?

And thanks again for the helpful responses!
