Hard starting 200 1991

My son plans to take our 240 from DC to MA in a couple of days, and I need to resolve a starting issue. The car has about 200,000 miles on it.

We don't drive this car often, but generally start it once a week. Often it won't start. Engine turns over fine but doesn't catch. Spraying starter fluid in the air cleaner generally causes it to start right up, then it runs strong.

The fuel pump seems to be running fine. I replaced the pre-pump and it seemed better for a while, but soon started acting up again.

I then replaced the plugs, plug wires, rotor and rotor cap--thinking I might have a weak spark issue. Again, seemed to help for a while but not long.

I then replaced the fuel filter. Still have problems.

I do have an error code stored that indicates the computer is adjusting for a lean or rich mixture. I did not clear the code. Will clearing the code change the computer?

The only next things I can think of are test the fuel pressure and measure the fuel delivery to see if the pump is working OK.

I suppose it could still be a spark issue, with a weak coil.

Any suggestions or ideas are welcome!

If the car is only driven about once a week, I suspect condensation in the fuel is a likely problem. Add a couple of bottles of dry gas BEFORE refilling the tank, then add one more per fillup for the next few tanks.

Especially in fall and spring, the large swings in temperature invite condensation problems. The less full your tank is, the more moisture-laden air over the gas is available to creat the problem. For cars driven infrequently, keep the tank 3/4 full or more. The last two gallons costs as much to put in as the first two gallons.

Doesn't necessarily line up with your symptoms (other than the hard start), but you should check your crank position sensor (CPS). Sits at the back of the engine, atop the transmission bellhousing. Cord comes up to a plug near the large, grey plug at the back of the engine. If this hasn't been replaced, it's overdue. The shielding on the wire starts to break down and will cause the sensor to tell the ECU that the engine isn't running or trying to start and cut the fuel flow. ~$25 and a simple fix, if in an out of the way location. Search the forum for a full writeup with pictures.

    Good luck,
    Zach

      Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that you only use the car weekly.

You should replace the fuel pump check valve. If problems persist, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

Both can be had at www.fcpgroton.com.

At one time I had a 68 122 and a 72 1800ES. Sold the 68 to fund a major overhaul of the ES. Got that in good shape then moved from suburbs to the city. No place for a vintage Volvo. I just held on to the 240 so the kids would have something to drive when they came home from college. My youngest is working in MA this summer and need transportation. When he heads off to his last year at college we will sell the 240 and I will be without a Volvo for the first time in 20 years.

I now live 3 blocks from the Metro and take either that or a bus to work. Rarely drive any more, so I guess it is better to get these cars into the hands of people who will use them.

        Thanks for the suggestions.
