Is there a difference between a 740 turbo and 740 turbo intercooler? 700

I have a 91 740 turbo. And on the trunk lid it says 740 turbo, but not intercooler. And most that I've seen say both 740 turbo and intercooler below that. So, am I just missing my word or is there a difference?

To the best of my knowledge, ALL 740 turbos were intercooled. It was an option on the 240 though.

There is no difference. Volvo dropped the "Intercooler" badge starting on 1991 model year 740 Turbos but they have intercoolers.

You have an intercooler. They may have dropped it from the trunk since all turbos should have intercoolers and the novelty may have worn off. Others can confirm or deny this.

My '89 is badged as an intercooler.

It is possible that the badging is missing, especially if the trnk was repainted and left off after painting.

It's easy to tell if your car is an intercooler model (actually I think that by your year all turbos had an intercooler) by looking in the engine bay for the intercooler.

Look for a large unit that looks rather like an additional radiator, mounted next to the engine side of the radiator. It will have a large diameter hose into it on the lower right side, and a similarly large diameter on the left from it to the throttle body.

Air leaving the turbocharger is heated and thus less dense. The intercooler removes the heat to raise the density and provide more oxygen into the combustion chambers.

Early turbo models, 240 and 740, did not have an intercooler. So when they came out as a factory item, badging was added, IIRC. At first the I-cooler could be added by the dealer or an enterprising DIY owner but no badging.

Good Luck,

Bob

B.C.,you may be right about some early 740 turbo cars being delivered without an intercooler, but I have owned most every year of the 740,starting with 1984,and raised the hood on hundreds more, and I don't recall seeing one without the extra plumbing and radiator.

Mine is a 1991. It has what looks like an oil cooler or little radiator on the drivers side of the real radiator. But it doesnt say intercooler on the back.

Maybe since the earlier cars could come without an intercooler, it was indicated by the badge on the trunk, but since all the later cars had them there was no need to put it there.
