horrible ide; bad fuel economy 200 1983

We're about to say goodbye to our 1983 240 GL with 122000 miles on it. We bought it used from someone who had maitained it poorly, as it turns out, and it was int the sun a lot, so it has basically no upholstery left, the dash is badly cracked; my son had a couple of mishaps in it; so cosmetically, it is no gem.

I am trying to figure out whether to invest anything in it mechanically before selling. The most significant problem mechanically is that idles VERY roughly; and it gets low fuel economy. By a rough idle, I mean the car shakes a little, and feels like the engine could die any second; as soon as I give it a little gas, it smooths out. In town, my son just got about 10-11 mpg on some short distance driving; I just drove the car home over a 150 mile distance, in Kansas, on moderate hills by the standards of the rest of the world, at 70-75 mph; got about 16-17 mpg in the process. I am able to accelerate up those moderate hills, so I've got power, just a really bad idle and excess fuel consumption.

I believe my son recently changed the spark plugs, but I think he did NOT change the distributor cap or use any fuel-injector-cleaner (both of which we did ourselves probably 30K miles ago).

Any suggestions on what the problem could be? And whether to bother with it, or just leave it to our buyer to deal with? There are plenty of other issues: AC is totally dead; electrical issues in the dash (temp gauge is erratic, warning lights come on when there is no problem).

Thanks.

A rough idle and poor fuel economy point to a few things. Depending on your stomach for chasing things down on a car you're about to sell, here's what I would look for, starting with easiest/cheapest first:

    - vacuum leaks. Very high probability, based on the bad idle you describe. I don't recall the intake path on a K-Jet system, but check the obvious places for vacuum leaks, including the intake manifold gasket. On K-Jet systems, the injector seals are a notorious cause of rough idles, but they're usually not bad enough to reduce gas mileage grossly. Spray some carb cleaner around each injector (where it goes into the manifold) one at a time with the car idling. If the idle changes, that's *A* problem to fix, maybe not the entire problem.

    - by all means, pull the distributor cap and rotor and inspect them for arcing and wear.

    - check the ignition timing

    - any dragging brakes?

    - if the engine labors to rev in idle, can't get over maybe 4000 rpm, you've probably got a timing belt that jumped a tooth.

    - pull the spark plugs and look at the tips. Burned? Whitish? Soaked with oil? Covered with fluffy carbon?

Just a few places to start.

I'm sorry for your poor experience with your 240. 122,000 mi. seems mighty low for a 1983 model, most would say it was just broken in mechanically.

I don't think you are going to get much more money from a buyer if you fix the mechanical things you've listed, maybe $100 more running well?

I would just see if anyone wanted a fixer upper and sell it to them.

with that low of mileage you might be better off parting it out if you wanted to take the time to disassemble stuff.

The airbox thermostat is important since summer is here. If you have that bad of fuel economy I'd wonder how the emmission is doing. How is the Air Mass Meter. With the key out try unplugging it and see the idle is stable. That part alone will cause bad fuel economy I believe. The O2 sensors in the 84 are cheap at under $40 I believe for a bosch. Other things to get it rolling smoother with less drag could be bearings on the wheels and driveshaft. Stuck caplipers dragging, old tires not giving tread, ect.... If the body is rust free and the looks pretty good you might as well just hit the junk yards over the next year and hope for a newer looking rear seat and maybe rebuild the front or find a replacement. Seat covers and with towels under them if the foam is going can extend the life too. What other car for the same price would you rather invest into. In a matter of 4 years and with help of this board you could see that car running great for years to come.
