Third tube on top of fuel sender? 200

I have an 82 k-jet 244. I am about to replace both fuel pumps and re-hose everything. I've noticed that there are three tubes on the top of the fuel sending unit from left to right: one connects to the main pump, the middle one is the fuel return(?), and the third is terminated in a loose fiting rubber nipple - what is this and what does it do? Should it be air tight?

The rubber cap should be a good fit, for safety at least. There used to be a hose there that came from the back of the (older type) fuel Accumulator. If the accumulator diaphragm leaked, the hose routed the fuel back to the tank.

But at some point the accumulator hose was discontinued and the tank entry was capped off, rather than redesign the sender unit to eliminate the fitting.

AHA that's right! The newer accumulators only have an inlet and outlet with the vent tube deleted. Thanks and have a great day.

I always find it amusing that we refer to something on our 20 year old cars as being the "new" design.

Yeah, I'm actually installing a New Upgraded intank pump - even though it's really a 7xx pump!
