Rear window defogger with it's own mind 200

I've read as many of the FAQs concerning this as I can stand and for once I'm more confused than when I started. The rear defog switch on my 86 240 apparently has a mind of its own. First time I used the defog switch (momentary no click)it turned on but wouldn't turn off till I stopped the motor and killed the power to it. Later on I had limited success in flicking the switch till it turned off.
So I replaced the momentary switch with a regular on/click of/click switch from the Ecology Center. No change in attitude. Obviously I've missed something. Should there be a time delay in the switch or can I replace it with one that turns off when I tell it to?

There is a relay that the switch pulls in when you hit the rocker switch. Comes on right away in my 86 and after a period of time it turns off.

You might want to check your fuse contacts on Fuse 12 (same fuse as the AC). Then check the relay. Do not have relay location right now, but someone can point you in the right direction.

Now there is one issue your post did not list you need to be aware of (at least did not see it). If you have a 245 (Wagon) there are wires that run through the roof, through the hinges and down into the rear door. If you do have a 245 you may be a victim of the broken wire in the hinge that all wagon owners love so.

Good Luck,

Paul

One series of posts (n the FAQ) conjectured that the delay mechanism was in the switch If in fact the delay is "normal" if someone could quote me a range of times it works in, maybe I can stop chasing my tail (for today)
If the delay relay is in fact exterior there are only so many places it can hide. I will dust of my Bentley's and see where that takes me.
Thanks as always.

The relay timer on my '84, and my two '93s, are all about 15 minutes .... 200

The relay timer on my '84, and my two '93s, are all about the same, ~15 minutes (I think '84 was the first year with this timer -- my old '83 didn't have it). This is about how long it takes to melt ice off the rear window in the morning.

Yep - all about 15 minutes on my '88, '91 and '92. The only way to turn it off in its OEM configuration is to WAIT or shut the ignition off.

hello
some 7/9 series have the relay built into the switch and also for the heated mirrors, not so in the 2 series in my experience.
good luck

I live in Southern California not Minnesota, so i'd rather be able to shut off the defogger/de-icer before it cooks off anything important.
It takes me about twenty minutes to get to work, and the r/w is clear before I get to the fwy. So if I think about it,I just turn off the motor at my last redlight, and be on with the drive. I would rather it shut off when I ask it to, Maybe there is someone who could tel me how to hot rod the delay so it runs for less time.
Thanks again
my basic quest is done.
Stop by The Regal Inn ( inLong Beach) some Wednesday night and I'll buy you a beer.
