Blower Motor blows (shorts) fuse #9 700 1989

I recently purchased a 1989 740 GLE Wagon. We've had some recent heavy rains which as lead to the discovery of some leaks. I repaired a leak on the driver's side by resealing the fresh air intake panel cover. I had a second leak on the front passenger side. Water was coming in through the blower motor. I removed the cowel and resealed the snorkel piece that sits over the blower motor. I also resealed the splash guard that sits over the entire area. The blower motor seems to run better already (it was making a groaning noise prior to repairing the leak). HOWEVER, now, whenever I turn on the defroster (the blower motor) it causes fuse #9 to short circuit and blow. I thus loose the power windows and turn lights. I'm thinking that either some water has caused damage, or that in the process of removing the panels and working around the blower motor that I caused some wire damage somewhere. Or, perhaps the water permanently damaged the blower motor causing a system overload? My knowledge of automotive wiring is limited. . . Any input would be welcome. Thanks.

The defrost turns on the AC also. Does the fuse blow when the AC is turned on by itself?

Well, I can't even get the the short to stop happening. The moment I start the car with a new fuse it blows in about 10 seconds. This happened even after I unplugged the blower motor. If I recall correctly, this issue was happening with either the air conditioner or blower motor powered on -- now, just all the time. Perhaps I have a bad relay switch? Again, my electrical knowledge is limited. Looks like I might have to break down and take it to the shop??

If its blowing fuse 9 with the fan unplugged then you have
        an easy problem to solve.
Start by unplugging the violet wire to the 4 pole fan relay in back
of the glove box. See if the fuse is OK
You have a short to ground somewhere, maybe a pinched wire.

It sounds like you may have pinched a lead (Violet to the motor)

or fouled up the resistor bank or it's four wires ( Yel,Brn, 2-Blu)

You can measure from the fan relay in back of the glovebox
Pin #1 Violet to ground and look for s motor winding....
Low ,NOT ZERO ohms.... somewhere around 2-5 ohms I'd guess

My spare heater fan motor measures 6.0 ohms
There's a starting point for you
the closer to zero ohms, the more likely the motor is kaput.
