What voltage should I get from alternator and battery while running? 200

I have had a charging problem for several weeks now on my 89 240 and I'm trying to solve it. I have a new alternator, new battery, and my new battery was dying daily. I recently replaced the battery cables and is not dying daily but the voltage at the alt seems to be low as well as the battery while idling. I say it is not dying daily, however 2 days ago, the battery was completely dead and left me stranded in a store parking lot. The battery read 0 volts. Today it has not died, and I drove it several times. I am getting 12.56 volts at the alternator at 600 RPM (my idle speed at park). If I turn lights on or AC with fan it dips below 12 volts. If I turn those accessories off, the battery climbs to 12.56 volts at the battery. Shouldn't I have over 14 volts while the car is running?

I have a real mystery on my hands and I'm completely sick of this dying battery issue and poor charging. I am going to change the ground wire on the alternator as it looks old. Any ideas and info?

    This sounds real familiar! 200

When you turn the switch on to II do all your warning lights come on?

If no, go out and measure from your alternator chassis to the block (ground), do you have zero ohms? If you do not there is a missing or broken ground wire. This is a hard learned BB lesson. To make sure this is the problem you can take wire and clip it from the engine block to the Alt chassis and repeat the test. If the lights all come on now, you need to replace the wire on the bottom side of the alternator that ties it to the block. Just to make sure start the engine and measure the voltage.

That little red wire has to be at chassis for the warning lights to come on, and as the alternator starts spinning up creates an excitation current that turns out your warning light. No warning lights means no connection on the red wire to chassis. Sitting on those insulated mounts the only ground for the alt chassis is that wire on the bottom side to the engine block.

If you do have a short check the small red wire on the back of the alternator. That has to be connected for the charging system to work. It runs under the engine and to the big gray connector in the middle of the car. Not going to be bad insulation, you have a 89.

By the way, it should have 13.8 volts to has high as 14.8 when it is working right.

    Good Luck,

    Paul

Thanks for the info Paul. I just checked the warning lights and I get 6 warning lights that light up. 3 on each side of the trip odometer reset button. On the left are Check engine, battery light, and oil light. On the right are parking brake, brake failure, and the blown bulb light. Are there any other lights that should light up? I did an ohm test and I get zero ohms at alternator.

If you measure the voltage on the back of the Alt(big post), to chassis with the engine running what is it?

If 13.8 that would point to a cables or battery issue.

        Good Luck,

        Paul

          My alternator/charging woes continued 200

When I remove the black ground cable from the battery I get over 14 volts from the alternator. The engine also idles and runs great. As soon as I attach the ground cable back, the voltage drops to around 12.5 volts with no accessories on in the car and the engine runs like crap. I went out and traded my battery and got a brand new one today thinking it might be it. I have new cables, new terminals.

After running the car on the highway with no accessories the battery does not charge past 12.5. Today I drove the car home from getting a new battery. At the parts store I got 13.5 volts while the car was running at the battery. By the time I got home after running the AC and the headlights, the battery was under 12 volts while running, and when I turned AC and lights off it slowly climbed to 12.5 volts. What is keeping the battery from fully charging and getting to over 13 volts?

            My alternator/charging woes continued 200

Just fixed a very similar issue on a ladies car for our church yesterday. Starter was dragging, battery voltage was only 13 volts, and a sudden intermittent no start when you turned on the key. All of that was caused by a single bad ground wire, and it made contact if you used an ohmmeter.

Since your problem is between the Alt which is grounded to the block by wire from the frame to the engine block. First make sure that Ground is solid. No green, no black, and a solid crimp and connection. You can take a good heavy gauge wire from the firewall and clip it on the body of the alt and see what the voltage does when you start the engine.

Then check the ground that goes from the battery to the engine block. Same thing, no green, no black , and a shine of the contact.

You can have continuity but still not have enough of a ground path. A Ground that is tarnished or corroded does not allow enough current to flow. Sort of like having a five inch water line that goes into a one inch drain. You get flow, but are limited to the volume of the smaller drain line.

One of those two is most likely your problem.

            Regards,

            Paul

Paul, when I remove the negative cable from the battery and check the voltage at the alternator I am getting over 14 volts. Wouldn't this signify the alternator is grounded well enough? Once I reconnect the negative cable the alternator voltage dips down to 12.2-12.5 or so. Perhaps this signifies a bad ground on the battery? I just replaced the negative cable though. Should I remove the bolt from where the negative cable is bolted and clean that connection?

            Hi,

I just put a 100 amp alternator from a 1992 740 on my 1983 B23 conversion. Boy that starter spins now!

You might invest the $15 at the pick and pull too. It was worth it for me.

    Hello,

Trickle charge the battery completely and try again. Autozone does this for free.

I am trickle charging it now. According to the charger it was at about 80% charge when I started charging it just now.
