Shifter won't go INTO Park 900 1994

Hello, all. My faithful 1994 940T has thrown me for a loop. Last night (at 10:00 PM!)as I was pulling into the garage it hung in reverse-after fiddling with the shift lock override I got it into the garage.I tested and bypassed the microswitch-no help. At that I decided to just remove the shift lock solenoid. I did that (finished around 2:30!),confidently started the car, shifted into reverse-and it hung again! Desparate, I found if I pushed my hand down on the left of the shifter and pressed down on a flat piece of plastic that sits parallel to the left inner side of the shift housing I could get the car into R,N,D-but not Park.I had tested the shifter while I had it up out of the box (it WAS on its side-hmm..)and it willingly slid through all gears.By the way,you can remove the key in any position now.Any ideas out there?

Shifter won't go INTO Park 900 1994

2 possibilities come to mind.
your engine and transmission are essentially the same as a 240 which i know pretty well.

the shifter is connected to a neutral safety switch via a pin which slides back and forth as your shift. the shifter pin s the male m part and groove it slides back and forth in is on the safety switch.

iof the neutral switch is misaligned this will prevent the shifter from going into park. on a 240 the trick is to loosen the switch and move it so it pin and grove correspond to the shift letters. it is not a big deal to do and is easier to see than to explain. do a search on the 240 board for neutral safety switch adjustment.

the other thing is could be but i doubt is the sagging trans mount which will throw the trans out of position in terms of the shifter lining up properly with the letters, p,r,d etc

Shifter won't go INTO Park 900 1994

My recently acquired '93 940 has exactly the same problem, and was that way when I bought it. The operational option is to park it in N with the Ebrake firmly applied, but that doesn't solve the problem.

I have asked the same questionon this board before, and have never received a good idea regarding the cause/solution to the problem.

Anybody have an answer?

Update! I had noticed that the key could be removed in any gear position now.I have discovered that if I remove the cable for the key removal lock from the shifter,it works normally. You can,of course now remove the key in any position but at least the shifter works.
