pre-emptively replacing problem switches or relays? 900 1993

subject: 1993 965 with 233k miles

Does this sound like crazy talk or is it something others here have done/attempted? There is no "sign" or warning (exc for very high mileage) that anything is about to fail, but having just been stranded once from something that turned out to be a faulty older alarm system (relay), I'm in no mood for another expensive "out of area" service bill. Hence the pre-emptive talk.

I'm at the mercy of my narrow driveway but I'm reasonably well versed in backyard mechanics. what would you replace and in what order (easy/inexpensive starting the list!) what do others think?

thanks.

fuel pump relay. not sure where it is in a 960, but it's buried under the radio in my 940 and took awhile to swap out (I always keep a spare one in my EFI Volvos) when it suddenly failed on the road.

Check out the section in the faq on http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/HighMileageVehiclePrevMaint.htm about preventive maintenance. As a former 960 owner and frequent visitor to this forum, I'd pay special attention to the timing belt, radiator and hoses, and heater control valve. Timing belt changes on schedule are mandatory to prevent catastrophic engine failure. Radiators seem to last about eight to ten years and pretty much fail on schedule.

I also see a fair number of references to engines that won't start due to a failed crank position sensor. They're cheap and fairly easy to replace, too.

The power stage module sometimes fails with age and heat. Since they're rather expensive, I wouldn't replace one just for PM. There are two - one for the even numbered cylinders and one for the odd numbered cylinders. If one fails, you still can limp home on three cylinders. Ask me how I know.

BTW, I have a new (in the box) 960 radiator from CSF that never made it into my 94 960 before I retired it. I'd be happy to get half price plus shipping if you're interested.

I'd also consider replacing the water pump if it's never been replaced whenever I had an occasion to drain the coolant.

And don't forget to take a look at the battery. Having been stranded a number of times due to old batteries, I'm all about replacing the battery well before the expiration of the warranty date. If you disconnect the battery cable, be sure to have your radio code to re-activate the radio when you put the battery back in.

That is good advice. I recently did a 100% replacement of all sensors and relays on my 93 944 for a couple of hundred dollars in parts. 15 years is a long time for any device to perform at 100% efficiency and it certainly gives me peace of mind when my wife is on the road.
