I threw a video up to vimeo that my wife and I shot last weekend when I first got the 245. The exterior and interior look like museum pieces. The engine bay is really clean, given that the previous owner never cleaned it, but it needs to be wiped down by myself. I actually prefer the previous owners to NOT clean the engine so I know where it has been leaking.
In this case, it looks like it only needed a new oil cap gasket, I had a few in my parts bag from my Volvo 850 endeavours.
Over the weekend I put Mobil 1 in the rear end and I cleaned the IAC out. The IAC looked almost new with only a hint of carbon in the one side. It's really weird owning a 240 that isn't grungy or stubbornly resisting my efforts to make it run right.
Here's the video:

I think you could be the most hated guy on the BrickBoard right now! :-)
A minty red 1993 245.... and it's a 5-spd?? Sweet buy.
Majorly jealous! Can't wait to get my 5-spd back on the road.

Congrats Luke on you newly found treasure! It’s is absolutely a beauty.
I found my 93 245 couple months ago from a local dealership. It is a single owner car with 135K miles, blk on blk with cloth or fabric seats. Exterior paint is as shiny as it was on the original dealer’s lot, headlight lenses are as clear as new. The seats (even the driver’s seat) feels like nobody ever sit on it. I was so excited when I saw it, I had to pay the full price to get it, $5500. Mine is an auto, so it’s just what my wife wanted. My blk one is very pretty. However, I always wanted a red one, of course in perfect shape! I hope that someday I will run into one like yours, red with a stick. Again, congrats and enjoy it for many years to come. Erwin

Pretty sharp. Love the red.
And you paid how much for this with how much mileage on it?

It's got 130k miles on it, and I had to pay over 4 grand.
More than I paid for my 850 which had 100k at the time I bought it. (Not when considering the price to get both to stage zero though.) Some things don't make much financial sense, but when I see something I want, I know it always pays off to just get it rather than talk about how I should have bought it for the next several years.
I got it from the original owner and it was decently maintained. I think I paid 5500 dollars for my '91 244 back in 1999 and it only had 90k miles on it. This red wagon is MUCH nicer than that car was. So book value be damned, I'm happy =)

My '93 with 111k on the clock cost over $5k two years ago from a dealer who offered a 6 month powertrain warranty. Don't let anyone hassle you over what you paid, these cars have value well beyond the price.

'93 244: 'A' cam 4 deg. advanced, 25/22 sways, custom heim endlinks, poly bushings, and a lot more styling customization than I care to recount.

...a few have commented on value and I wanted to make clear I think you did superbly!
I may have gotten mine cheaper, but other than a nice body and sound engine it was abused hard and I had to put a ton of money into it over the past six months and a whole lot of time underneath it- as documented here in the board- to get it running smoothly. We pick our poison with these cars I suppose!
Love the close up hood shot of Red too...

You did not overpay. I turned down 2 separate offers of $6K for my 91 245 5 speed . Nice car! Nice wagons with low miles and no rust are getting hard to find.

Don't be too concerned over book values. They are only a guideline, and the individual car will be valued on its own merits. You can probably find another Volvo with equal miles as the one that you purchased. The paint might be dull, and the interior faded, and somewhat shabby. If the maintenance had not been kept up by the original owner, would that car be worth what you paid for yours? If you are happy with your car, and what you paid for it, then it was a great deal. I know that I would not sell my 85, 245 for that price.

Pretty much my philosophies too...
I've spent about $2000 (incl. new tires) in parts for my 89 that had 122k on it. I paid $1600 for it last November. I probably should have paid less and I wanted an 90-93 but a handful I saw were going for about what you paid for RED. I couldn't wait to save up a little more because I didn't have a vehicle at the time.
So in the end I'm close to spending what you did as I'm at stage zero maintenance now. I've also gone above and beyond replacing all bushings front and rear and all suspension parts in front.
Given that your's is red- a vulnerable paint color- it looks as though it was kept under cover quite a bit and looks very clean all around. Good pick.
Mine has a slight bit of engine tap/tick too. A dealer mechanic and a separate mechanic said not to even mess with it.
Nice job on the purchase!

Your B230 has the same "tick" that mine....guess that's normal?

It's much louder on the video than in real life. This 93 is quite a bit quieter than my 1991 was. However, yes, they all sound alike. People used to ask me if my 91 was a diesel. As far as I know, since the lifters are hydraulic, you don't really have a way to adjust things. My oldest (and highest mileage) Volvo was my 82 242. The engine on it was nice and quiet like this 1993 version.
In my 850, it's the fuel injector rail that makes most of the loud ticking noise.
Meanwhile, when my Isuzu pickup starts making this noise, I pop the valvecover and adjust the valves and it goes away ;)

Luke,
Beautiful car. Congratulations!
To the best of my knowledge, all B230F engines call for a valve adjustment (or at least to check the clearances) every 30,000 miles. The clearances are adjusted by way of shims of varying sizes that you can get from your local dealer or IPD. I've found that most 230f's do not require adjustment after about 60K until they have between 150-200K miles on them, and even then it's minimal.
