Diff Ratios 700

Hi all

Just want to get my head around diff ratios.

I would like to know what diff would be in a genuine 87 740 turbo with a m46?
I own a 87 740 turbo with a m46 which i converted from a AW70 i currently has a 3.73 diff.
on the weekend i drove a genuine 87 740 turbo with a m46 with an unknown diff ratio. and made my car feel like a granny scooter.
Both my car and the one i drove on the weekend and setup the same, both have turbo+, same cam, etc.
The only difference i know of is my box is the older cast iron. and the other alloy, and both have roughly the same k's

the person who owns the car said this is mostly likely due to my car being setup for auto and the diff ratio being wrong.
When driving my car the car has a habit of reving out very fast without much pull, whilst the other revs steadly and pull like a dog with a golf ball up its arse.

please could someone shed some light on the problem, could there be something else i am missing, clutch?? gearbox ratios?? etc.

    a turn of phrase 700

    Neill,

Others have already answered your question. Which is good because I haven't a clue. But...

...whilst the other revs steadly and pull like a dog with a golf ball up its arse.

What part of the world do you call home? That phrase conjured an immediate and intense mental picture that is not soon to leave me. ROFLOL

I grew up (in East Texas) hearing the phrase, "faster than a spotted-ass ape". The phrase never made sense to me. What is a spotted-ass ape? Exactly how fast is one of that species? Your description of applied torque makes much more sense.

My dad used a phrase, "slicker than owl shit". He grew up just outside of Boston. When I was about 12 I asked him, "Dad, how slick is owl shit?" He laughed so hard he cried but he never answered my question. I still don't know how slick it is. ;-)

I also converted mine to a manual but opted to install a 3.31 for better mileage. It came with a 3.90 rear end with the AW71.

The '87 w/ M46 came with 3.54 gears; I put a 3.73 locker in mine. It pulls HARDER (as one would expect) with the 3.73s. BTW, gas mileage is identical.
There should be no difference in gearbox ratios, unless you have a very early M46, in which case 1st. is higher than the later ones. "Reving out without much pull" sounds like a slipping main clutch or OD sprag clutch.
