Who sells group 46 batteries? 200

The local Sears Auto (which used to have the Die Hard International group 46 for sale) was unable to order a group 46 battery. It seems that group 46 is not commonly available in most battery brands.

It is for a 1982 245.

FWIW, 48 looks longer than 46, if chart is accurate.

Look for a style 24 battery. That fits like it grew there.

Edit:: I should have looked before I posted... you got the info you needed

My 242 calls for the group 46.
I bought a battery from NAPA a couple of years back that was the correct size and has the hold down "toes."
It was actually BCI #24 which they claimed superesedes group 46, so you might want to inquire about that.
I have seen group 46 batteries on line recently but I do not know if they have the hold down feature. Generic photo, you know.

I recall using Group 24 in older 240's too... 200

...Seems like there was a 24-? or some suffix that had opposite terminal configuration from the basic group 24. 24T comes to mind. But it's been years now.

There was a 24F. F for Ford I believe.

Hi, Bruce.
This one is simply labeled BCI No. 24. NAPA p/n is 6024. They still sell it. Positive terminal is closer to the fender and negative is closer to the airbox.

A-Ha! It IS a 24T! Looks to be Universal for end-clamped applications (EDIT) 200

I just looked at one in the garage. Terminal posts are fore and aft, so the battery can be installed either way (clamp "toes" on each end too).

The EXIDE label say 24-60. But it's pasted over a more permanent BCI label listing a bunch of numbers from 27 up, with blanks to be checked for whatever applies I guess.

This one also has the "24T" molded in the case right near the Negative terminal

EDIT: This Exide 24T is about 10.5" long. If that's to short for toe-clamping both ends (I don't have a 240 to check), I have used it with a spacer block at the outer end, relying on just the inner clamp. I've also used humongous zip-ties around battery and tray.

I checked mine and it is a Group 48 - same dimensions as 46 200

The part number is 48-3

I also checked the Group 48 and Group 46 battery dimensions and they are identical:

Length 7.87
Width 6.66
Height 6.8

So, the right size battery is available at Wallyworld. The only catch is that is is not part of their premium line, but costs like it is. It was $69 and change.

Do the 700 take the same battery? 200

If so, I just bought one from Wal-Mart. It fits correctly and the clamp holds it.

When I buy batteries I chose the one with the greatest Cold Cranking Amps and Reserve. Size 78/34 DT from Costco fits.

I got my last one from INTERSTATE, but when I tried to get one from them 6 months ago they had been discontinued.

No one sells them anymore, I think Volvo switched because it was a safety issue, with the + terminal being next to the fender. It can dangerous working near it with wrenches, or in the case of an accident the fender can come into contact with the + terminal.

I gave up looking for a 46 and made the switch to a 47. I was able to reroute the negative cable and gain enough lenght to switch sides. I also rigged holdown, but I can't remember how at the moment.

I just checked Exide and Interstate, and neither catalogs a Group 46 any more. Group 47 is what is spec'd on later 240's, and I've used them successfully in both New England and Arizona.

What year is your car, and does it clamp the battery on the short ends?

My 1982 245 holds down the battery on the short ends. Since a group 47 battery is 1.1" shorter than a group 46 battery, will the hold down clamps reach the battery?

My 245 is a '92, and the battery is clamped down by means of a molded plastic (?) piece which grabs the forward flange of the battery and the edge of the battery tray. Exactly the same as my '88.

It's no biggie to get a universal battery clamp from a parts place, and jury-rig it to fit. More work, but you could find a boneyard and grab a battery tray and clamp from a later 200.
