Overdrive switch question (shift arrow stuff) HELP 200 1993

The 240 overdrive is out. The light did not work but i could hear the relay clicking when i pushed the button. I got under the car, and sure nuff, the wire was cracked and bare spots were visible. I got up to the shifter and started pulling the wire out up thru the shifter to replace it when bam, i forgot to turn off the power and when that naked wire hit the shifter sparks flew. I then turned off the key and finished re doing the wire. When i tried to get the shift overdrive switch to work, nothing, not even a click in the relay. I am going to the junkyard to pull some relays (i probably blew mine). So where I am at now:

1. Arrow light out
2. Car overdrive not working, it is constantly in tow mode
3. Relay probably blown

My questions: does the solenoid on the tranny go out very often or is this probably just a relay or did I short out the switch on the shift knob? Also, does anyone have a wiring diagram for this switch/solenoid/relay circuit they could post or email me. My manual does not have that detail. Thanks

Check the fuse and replace if blown, then swap the relay with the one from your other car to diagnose things if the fuse doesn't fix things. Most likely a blown fuse (that's what they're there for!), less likely the relay is shot, and pretty unlikely that you did any damage to the solenoid.

    Good luck!

It was the fuse. I must have forgot to check it after I ran the new wire and it sparked. All I remember is that I was tired and frustrated and the family was going to be late for church!!! What a boob I am. I should have known it was the fuse when my rear window defroster wasnt working. Thanks to all. I should have checked the simplest thing!

Before doing anything look at your fuses. There is a fuse for 4 th gear. Solenoids rarely fail. relays for overdrive go all the time ... always keep a spare. The wire from the relay should be 12v pos. whenever running. No voltage means no 4th gear.
