still messin' with the 740 700

1990 740 Turbo - 191,000 miles -
She starts and can be driven. Have code 224 on socket 6. Have the idle where it is suppose to be after cleaning throttle body. I have replaced crankshft positioning sensor, coil, wires, cap and rotor, plugs, throttle positioning sensor and igniter (the device on the left fire wall with a heat sink) - When idling, there is an occasional cutout and the car will not accellerate without cutting out a little. It will accellerate but not how it should. Seems to be runniong rich. I cannot find any vacuum leaks. I have replaced nearly all rubber lines. The 2-2-4 code is the only error code. socket 2 is 1-1-1. The check engine light is not on. The car does not start up immediatly but turns over a few times. Comprssion is good and when the car was running better a couple months ago, it had lots of power. Seems it just needs a little tweeking to bring her back to her former glory...

The turbos NEED the Bougicord type plug wires. If you don't have them it will cause a weakened spark that will lead to missfires during boost.

All lines seem to be good. It will accelerate but want to cut out before revs start going up

2-2-4 Engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor signal absent or faulty.

The coolant sensor would cause poor running condition?

The coolant sensor would cause poor running condition?

Absolutely. The ECU depends on the ECT (and the IAT) to know how to adjust the pulse time of the injectors to produce the correct air/fuel mix. If the ECT is out of range, setting the 224 code, the ECU goes into a limp mode by ignoring further input from the ECT and controlling the injectors with a default value for temperature compensation.

Well then, that must be the problem. Sure seems like a whole bunch of sensors went out at the same time. Thanks for the advice, Mark

There was a TSB on the ECT sensor a while back, if the service mod was applied it will always trip the error code but not the service light.

Read the FAQ on ECT sensor.

It was easy to change once I pulled the intake manifold back from the block, have a new gasket ready. If you don't pull the manifold you're lucky if you can see the sensor.

still messin' with the 740, STILL! 700

Well... I removed the intake and found the correct sensor. I took it out, replaced it and put everything back as it was. I replaced one more vacuum line that looked questionable. All of this took less than 45 minutes I think. Got in to start and ... Runs worse than before. Check engine light came on. Now throwing code 1-2-3 on socket 2 and still 2-2-4 on socket 6. I just read the FAQ sent by Joe (wasnt up before I started this) and think I may have done a couple of things wrong. I didnt disconnect the battery. I know one should do this before any work like this but as much as this thing has put me through thus far, it just slipped my mind. I hope I didnt screw anything up because of that. I may have also caused the sensor to not get proper ground to the head because I used sealant on the threads. So it looks like I may be doing this procedure again. Also, if you are reading this, does anyone know if the ecu needs to be case grounded? i.e., bolted into the car? Thanks to all who post! This seems to be the best forum of the six or so I have seen on the web.
