Driveshaft stuck to pinion flange 700

Anybody had any issues with their driveshafts getting stuck to their pinion shafts? I'm trying to replace the rear tranny seal on my '85 745 w/ LT1/4L60E. I can't remove the driveshaft because I can't get the driveshaft to separate from the pinion shaft. I've removed all 4 nuts/bolts, but now I'm stuck. I haven't had this apart since building the car 4 years ago, though a shop did rebuild the rear end last time I blew up my gears.

I've tried penetrating oil and a cold chisel. I'm worried that If I whack on it too much I'm going to damage my pinion bearing/seals.

Any guesses???

    Thanks for everybody's ideas!

    I couldn't get any of the suggestions to work. So, I put on the ebrake and gently put the car into reverse. Driveshaft popped off the pinion flange with a groan and all was good.

    I assume you have the car up on jackstands to work on it. If so, where are the stands? If they are under the axle, so that the suspension is compressed, that can make it tough to get the flange apart, as the driveshaft splines are almost fully compressed. Jack the back of the car up by the differential, and move the stands to the jack points or another suitable location under the body, and lower the jack. With the axle hanging at full extension, it should be a lot easier to separate the flange.

      Unfortunately, the car is already supported by jack stands at the rear jacking points. I had a differential cover leak that I was fixing concurrently, so I needed the axle hanging as low as it would go. I've also disconnected the center bearing support, so the driveshaft is unstressed and not putting any weird torque on the pinion flange to driveshaft joint. =(

        If you have access to one, try a bearing puller, which consists of two curved wedges with a pair of heavy threaded rods at the ends. Tightening the nuts forces the wedges together. This tool is normally used for removing bearing races pressed onto flanged shafts and the like, but I have had success with it on a stuck driveshaft flange before.

    How about putting the tranny in PARK (parking brake OFF) and then rocking the car fore and aft in hopes of breaking the bond?

    If that doesn't work, I've got a bit more severe idea, but I'm REALLY RELUCTANT to suggest it.......

      Chris,

      ROCKING the car sounds like a good idea. The only "power" method I could think of was probably your "extreme" idea... putting on the ebrake and putting it into drive. Didn't like the idea of the driveshaft actually coming off the pinion flange and bouncing around. =) Rocking the car sounds much better.

    Howdy Simon,

    I've never encountered one that would not separate though some were rather reluctant to do so.

    You are wise to not force the pinion flange. I reckon there is oxidation around the perimeter of the two flanges that has them joined together. Use a soft mallet or block of wood and try to bump the driveshaft forward. You will be striking at an angle but that is OK, it should dislodge the driveshaft flange from the pinion flange. Report back and let us know how you get them apart.

      I've been soaking with pb blaster for 24 hours now so hopefully the oxidation is giving up. I'll try the block of wood, though the only place to get a decent whack is on the other side of the Ujoint, putting stress on the Ujoint.

        Hi Simon,

        This sounds like a good time to find an old beat up butcher knife.
        Put the sharp part in the seam of the flange and whack the back of that
        butcher knife with a solid sharp whack with a BFH (maybe a 32 oz ball pein
        hammer) Whatch out the thing doesn't fall on your nose.

          Try putting a jack under the center support of the driveshaft, push it back up into position. Put it in neutral and push the wheel with your foot to get the shaft rotating and start whacking it with a 3 lb'er.
          You have to hit u joints damn hard to change u joint bearings, you'll never be able to hit it that hard from under the car.
          Hit it, we're men around here.
