91 744ti speedo question. 700 1991

so... i've only had the car about 3 weeks... so i don't know all the ins and outs yet...

anyway...

so the other day... i noticed my speedometer wasn't working... although it had been working up until i noticed it wasn't... after driving around for about an hour... it started working again... i thought maybe it had something to do with going through the car wash?

Anyway... this morning... got in the car... speedo was working... just got in the car to go to lunch.... no speedo...

it rained pretty hard right before i got in the car... is there some electrical connection that could be bad and so when it gets wet it's effecting the speedo?

crappy cable?

if anyone has a suggestion on how to test it... i'd appreciate it...

thanks.

Sounds like you're in the same boat I am with our '91 745

First check the connector in the rear axle. Volvo put a "safety wire" there supposedly to hold the connector together, all it does in reality is slice into the insulation of the wires.

If the above checks out, your problem is likely the cluster board itself. The solder tends to crack over time. You can either reflow the solder yourself, have it done professionally, replace the board with a used one, or replace it with a new one (about $100 from Volvo).

I guess before condemning the circuit board, first check the grounds, connectors, and that the speedo is securely screwed into the board.

Good luck!
