M41 rattle question 140-160

M41 (D-type as I recall) tranny that shifts well is currently in a 142. Only problem is a rattle when decelerating. I plan on pulling it out and installing in a BW-35 equipped 144 but I'd like to fix it while it's out of the car. Any words of wisdom or advice as to what I should be looking for?

    M41 rattle question 140-160

    Hello,
I think planetman might be on it. If this M41 has a short shifter as post 72 140's do.... it could be the remote shifter assembly. There is a worn out brass bushing that holds a shifter rail assembly on top of the M-41. I saw this in two 140's 25 years ago.
Hope I guessed right and helped you.

    M41 rattle question 140-160

Not a lot to go on, but if it is gearbox related you may be able to sense a input or output bearing problem after it is out and you can turn the input or output shaft by hand.

I kind of doubt that either of those would give a "rattling" problem. You really need to try to and give more information of the symptoms any you'll probably get a better response to your post. Does it do it in neutral? Is there clunking when going from accelerate to decellerate? Any other noises? Does it do it only on straights or around curves etc?

If you have it out anyway, why not just pull it apart and freshen it up?

It's always possible that you have some other driveline problem, ie. rear end, rear end bearings, u-joints, center bearing etc.

      M41 rattle question 140-160

      Hello,

      More info needed.

Is the rattle from the shifter handle?

        M41 rattle question 140-160

Sorry for the lack of details. I haven't driven the car in a year. It's a car that I sold last year. The current owner got rear-ended so I'm getting it back as a parts car for the 144 and another 142 that I just purchased. As I recall it happened when you let off the gas but before engaging the clutch. I could also feel it in the shifter. It wasn't afffected by corners, gear that it was in, or speed. It shifted fine and there wasn't any clunking. I've never dug into a transmission before but I'd rather learn with it out of the car then do the swap first and break something later. Was the D-Type the early M41 and the J-Type was the later one?

          Sounds like a u-joint 140-160

There isn't much in the trans to cause a rattle at speed. Probably the driveshaft telegraphing through it. Check the u-joints.

I agree, a rattle is likely to be from something outside of the transmission. If you can get it up in the air so you can check out the box and OD + the driveshaft and centre bearing, before you start tearing it down, you might find something. Loose gearbox cross member or speedo cable hitting the exhaust might be worth checking. Depending on how hard the car was hit, that might compromise your investigations. Did you post a pic of the crunched rear end some time back?
Yes the D type OD is the early one and the J the later version. The change over is approx the change from B18 to B20 but I've not seen that in print.

I haven't posted any pics of it since it got hit. It broke the tail light, jammed the trunk, and creased the sheetmetal underneath the back seat wing window. When I get to the point of swapping parts I'm going to have a work weekend at my place with some of the locals. Hopefully I can bribe an expert with beer and good eats to school me on transmissions.

Well nevermind. The guy that I had made a deal with sold it out from under me without bothering to let me know. 4 days ago I was making arrangements with him to pick it and today he emails to tell me that he sold it to his brother-in-law. Sometimes I really don't like people! Now I need to find another cheap source for an M41, pedal assembly, and full IPD suspension. Grr!
