97 960 strut spring compressor 900 1997

Hi all I just received new Volvo struts for my 960(97) and I was looking for advice on what spring compressor to rent/borrow/buy to complete this job. Anyone have input on the one from ipd. It's the internal compressor. Thanks.

I don't think you can use an internal spring compressor on the front springs of your car -- the strut is in the way.

I know IPD has a set of standard external compressors that are identical to what you can get at any auto parts store, Sears, etc.. I own a set and they work great. You can get them for free through the tool loaner program at most auto parts places. (that would be my suggestion)

Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback, I went to Sears and bought their craftsman mcpherson strut tool for 54.00 and it's heavy duty. The local auto stores wanted 40-50 for rental. I told them to pound sand.

I didn't feel bad buying mine because they fit practically every car on the road (except of course my MB!) -- so I'll get a lifetime of use out of them.

The auto part places around me have a loaner program. If the tool you want is in their "pool" of loaner tools, they charge you the purchase price, then refund it in full (including sales tax) when you return the tool. Most have a very liberal timeframe for returning the tool -- like 60 or 90 days.
