95 940 Fuel Pump: Is this going to be a problem? 900 1995

It looks like my 95 944 Turbo's fuel pump has failed. I'm a little concerned that the Bosch replacement pump is not a direct fit. Some online part suppliers note extensive modifications to the original housing may be require to get the new pump to fit. Any one have any experience replacing a 95 940 Turbo in-tank main pump?

I don't know anything about these, as all my other Bricks have the main pump mounted under the car and only an assist pump in the tank. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

The first one you do WILL be a mother. Everything from the band clamps being rusted solid(I carefully snip them off with wire cutters) to the obnoxious working angle involved(my back always aches for a couple days thereafter). The angle of the dangle makes it a bitch getting the sending unit in and out of the orrifice and a particular pain to get over the splash guard in the bottom of the tank(use the rope thru the vent hole trick). Took me a good 5 hours the first time, now I can do in less than 2. As an aside I once got 2 bad pumps in a row from FCP and ended up buying a volvo oem the third time...not a job you want to have to do 3 times in 2 months trust me. I just replaced one last weekend with a upgraded version sold by IPD. Its about 1.5 inches longer than the original but the same diameter. Wasnt a big deal, just had to deal with some extra wire length and fuel line length on sender. Enjoy.

95 940 Fuel Pump: Is this going to be a problem? 900 1995

I replaced both fuel pumps in my 1994 940 last winter. The main problems I had were you can not tell what pump you have until you remove it, and that is what I was told by the dealer. The second problem was getting the new pump installed. You will need to shorten the pump by pulling it up with a string through the fuel inlet and once it is in, you can remove the string. You may not understand exactly what is meant by shortening , until you have it in your hands. What I found most useful was this site(http://cleanflametrap.com/ReginaFuelPump/), lots of pictures. Hope this helps.

95 940 Fuel Pump: Is this going to be a problem? 900 1995

I was under the impression that all 700/900 series turbo cars had two pumps; a pre-pump in the tank and the main pump and filter under the car on the driver's side....

I replaced a pre-pump in my current project car a 1994 944T. The intank assembly was more difficult to get in and out than the 740 series cars I had done before. After the fact I made a comment to that effect in a post and it was pointed out that the intank assembly on the later cars is a bit different and if I had read the FAQ's it would have pointed out how some monofilament would have made the task much easier...

So make sure you do your homework: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/FuelSystem.htm#FuelPumpandSenderReplacement

I replaced one a couple of years ago. And yes, it is going to be a problem. I don't remember any difficult issue mounting the pump in the housing. The problem was getting the housing out of and back in the tank. One tip I found out after I got the pump and housing out was that the housing is collapsable a few inches. By shortening the unit, it was easier to get it back in (and would have been easier to remove if I had known it at the time).
