Fuel Tank Leak 120-130

I've got a slow leak at the outlet to my fuel tank. It's not the hardline fitting that is leaking, but the bung that is in the tank. What are my options to fix this leak?

    Fuel Tank Leak 120-130

    Hello.
Many years ago, at least 20, the tank of my 122S cracked where the filler neck is soldered to the tank. My late father had a huge electric soldering iron, that I now own, which we used to clean up and remove the old solder where the crack was and then to resolder the filler neck to the tank. Before you do the resoldering it is important that area to be soldered is sqeaky clean as well as absolutely bare metal. Also use a good flux, if I remember correctly we used a product called 'Fluxite'. The solder that we used was the normal 60/40 lead/tin alloy that the plumbers used. Up until today I have had no further problems. With what I have told you and tried to explain it might be an idea to try and solder the section that is leaking.
    Hope you come right.
    Greig.

You're talking about the brass fitting on the bottom with the drain plug?

If so, I had that issue with my 1972 145 (my first volvo). It drove me nuts. The final solution was to drain the tank and mix up some JB weld and smear it around the fitting. That sealed it up for good. It was never a problem again - and I lived on a dusty rural gravel road at the time - lots of potential punishment to the tank

I did something similar when the 122 fuel tank filler neck was leaking back in the spring/summer of last year. Has not been a problem since. No smell of fuel in the trunk.

I've always had excellent results with JB weld over any of that two-part clay junk they sell at the autoparts shops. JB is great stuff. Next best thing to a hot weld.

It's likely the rubber seal that's all crispy and hard. You can buy replacement seals.

There's a rubber seal there...news to me. Do I access it from inside the tank?? (i.e pull sender and then reach over and hold it somehow to R&R the fitting...oh I'll be needing my magical arms to do this unless I drop the tank)

Upon reading your original post over about 5 times, it occurs to me we are talking about two different access points to the tank. I was talking about the level sender bung...

        Just weld it up...

        Uh...hang on a sec...

        Fuel Tank Leak 120-130

I had an 1800 tank that randomly started to leak around that fitting. It was slow but you could smell it in the shop if I left it there for a day or two. The undercoating on the tank was soft and damp. I found that there was no hole there but the gas was weaping though the soder around the fitting. Strange but that is what was happening... I tried with various epoxy puddies from the outside to stop it but it never lasted more than a week. I dropped another tank in there that I had reconditioned with a POR-15 kit. I have had very good luck with the POR-15 gas tank kit if you just take your time. I normally figure it's about a 10 day process to make sure it's done right. But I have one on my tractor that is now 8 years old and works wonderfully.

          Hey Chris,

This sounds exactly like the problem I'm having. The bung into the tank is weaping and the undercoating is stained etc. Just about everything else on my car is sealed with POR-15...why not add the tank to that list. I'll see what I can come up with.

          Craig
