A few pointers from a '91 740 sedan owner:
Look for cracked/missing insulation at the various connector points on the wiring harness. That kinda goes for all the older bricks... If you have access to the service records/repair reciepts, see if it's had a fuel pump/sending unit replaced. If not, be ready to DIY. I've been told The Regina fuel pumps go bad near 130k, even tho mine is still tickin'...
Get on your back and check the front end suspension. Grab the wheel and give it a good pull and push while watching the strut rod bushings (located below the bottom of the strut mount). If there is moticeable movement the bushings are bad, and that will virtually guarantee it will need an alignment, maybe more. While you're down there, check the skid plate (or gravel shield, belly pan). If it's cracked apart in several spots (or missing!) you know someone watched too many episodes of "The Dukes of Hazzard".
Had to replace the original water pump at about 128k, the origional muffler at ~115k, the y pipe at 130k. Just did the timing belt/tensioner pulley/ all front seals plus oil pan gasket 3 weeks ago, and she's in as good'a shape (better, the front crack seal was leaky when I got it) as when I bought her for $3,200 (w/ 97k) 4 years ago! Gotta clean my flametrap tho... The fun never stops :)
$2,100 sounds like a good price as long as the mileage isn't outrageous... wait, can volvos have outrageous mileage? I think that's all from me It's 2:30am and I need to sleep. Any other q's email me. I'm sure the other BB'ers will have more suggestions- I prostrate myself to the collective Volvo mind-hive.
