Front wheel spindle nut size? PLEASE!!! 200 1986

I have to replace or repack the front wheel bearings on my 86 245DL "shaggin waggin" Before I tear into it it I'd like to know what size socket the spindle or crown nut takes. You'd be my Hero for a week if you could tell me as I am about to embark on a 1700 mile roadtrip.

That nut is not tight... snug at best. Channel Locks can be considered the correct tool.
I tighten by feel not Torque on Wheel bearings.

The nut isn't really tightened down. It is held in place by a cotter pin. So you don't really need a well fitting socket to remove it. Just pull the pin and unscrew the nut with an adjustable wrench or slip-joint pliers.

On installation the nut is tightened to seat the hub, then it is backed off to allow the hub to spin freely without lateral play. Ie. without a torque wrench, I tighten the nut till the wheel starts binding then back it off, spinning the wheel until it moves freely and then insert cotter pin.

I do mine with an adjustable wrench. The 41-lb spec is probably the approved way but they're not difficult to do. You've still got to hunt for the slot when you back off so it's not an exact torque anyway

    1 1/16" or 27mm is what fits... 200 1986

I just checked on my spares.

But don't rush into it if:

    1) You haven't done the job before,
    2) Get your parts at NAPA etc,
    or
    3) Don't have the Bentley manual.

Contrary to Marc's advice, installation or adjustment calls for tightening to 41 ft lbs while rotating the hub. Then backing off 1/2 turn and easing forward again to the closest cotter pin hole (there are two).

What I meant was that allthough it is an enormous nut it is not supposed to be tight. 41 lbs/ft is hardly tightening for a nut that size, you're not going to break it if your tool is not an exact fit.

Size 28 (metric) fits, 30 does the job too. Big pliers should be adequate as well, no real tightening is needed.
