Questions on 86 244... 200

How can I tell which ignition/FI system I have? Chilton's has a handful of different diagrams with names like "LH Jetronic" and "REX 1", but I'm not sure which one I have. It has a manual transmission, but I don't know if it's a m46 or m47 or something else. How can I find out which tranny I have, and what's the difference, if any?

Thanks

Go to vlvworld.com and find the Information Center. There you will find that your transmission is an M46.

In the Bentley, notice the table on the first page of the Ignition System section. According to that, you do have the Volvo/Chrysler ignition system. So, you will have the white distributor cap. Bosch used the pumpkin colored caps through all years, as far as I know.

Also in the Bentley, table a., pg. 241-2, your '86 is identified as LH2.2. On the same page is a chart of functionality for each of the LH versions.

However, a lot can happen in 22 years. People change things, sometimes just for the sake of change. Once you know what you are looking for, verify it is present on your car. For instance, if you've got a pumpkin colored cap on the distributor, or a distributor on the head, your car has been changed from the original configuration; all bets are off when it comes to ID from a book. ;-)

Also, signup at volvo.com and seek out the Owner's library; the owner's manual that is usually lost from the glove box is available there.

Thanks for the info. It has a bosch distributor cap, which doesnt suprise me- I have a great set of records for the car, including the original service log from when the car was first purchased in '86! Unfortunately, the owner's manual is indeed missing, and nothing else told me the info I asked for. I will have to check out volvo.com- sometimes I forget the expanse of info availible on the www.

Re; The Volvo/Chrysler White Cap Distributor, etc. 200

"So, you will have the white distributor cap. Bosch used the pumpkin colored caps through all years, as far as I know."

Only the "early" ('82-'83?) came with the white cap. I don't know when the factory cut over to Bosch came in. But even many early ones may have been swapped for a Bosch by now. The only requirement was to swap the round, 3-pin Chrysler harness plug for the Bosch rectangular plug.

In any event, the Bomber's '86 is sure to have the Bosch distributor in his V/C ignition system.

The M46 is 4 + overive.
The M47 is true 5-speed.

I agree that he could really use a Bentley 240 service Manual.

Re; The Volvo/Chrysler White Cap Distributor, etc. 200

I guess this Bentley manual is best? I've only ever heard the "Haynes vs. Chilton" arguments, I didnt know there was another option! I'm guessing ebay would be the easiest place to find one?

Re; The Volvo/Chrysler White Cap Distributor, etc. 200

They were out of print for several months, but are available again. The list price is about $50, but they can be some parts sites like eeuroparts for $30 or so, maybe less for used ones on ebay.

Google Bentley 240 Service Manual for a start. I din't know if the new one is updated in any way, or merely a reprint. Either way i'ts worth having, IMO.
