Transmission confusion...? 700

Hi all,

As my second post for the night, I've run into a conundrum: I know that the ZF tranny was standard on '87 740GLEs. I have a '87 740GLE, but it's on its 3rd transmission - and the receipts from the PO say 'AW7 GRBX' as the transmission replacement type. What's up with this? Does this indicate a swap? There are also hints at an AW71 gasket. Weird.

I have yet to actually look under my car to read the tranny label. :)

    The AW series are, from what I read on the BB, more robust. Want Proof? I recently (accidentally) shifted into reverse at 65 mph. The rear tires let go and squealed like mad. We were certain the AW was ruined or at least messed up. Its fine. (You aren't even supposed to rev the motor in neutral with a ZF. How pitiful.)

      Except that the ZF is SO much nicer to drive----the shifts are smoother, and, more importantly, occur at intelligently spaced intervals, and the kickdown happens exactly when you want it to for spirited driving. Your Volvo can have the same transmission as a BMW, or a Toyota pickup---which would you prefer to drive. Other than the revving in park or neutral problem, the ZFs are plenty durable---I had and 86 with one one that still worked perfectly at 200K miiles.

      I have an 87 745 with an AW, which I bought from the original owner, so I am pretty sure it came that way from the factory.

    What does your shifter look like?

    PRND321=ZF tranny
    PRND21 + button on side=AW tranny

    I'd guess from the receipt that your car has been changed to an AW 7-series model.
