the worst offender for bad road mileage? 900

What is the single thing that, when it is long in tooth, seems to draw down the mileage on the 960s?

Not a 960 but raising the tire pressure on my 855t from the "normal" pressure posted on the sticker to the higher, "full-loaded, hwy speed" rating, increased mileage from 20-21mpg to just under 28mpg without affecting the ride quality.

A bad engine coolant temp sensor (besides high highway speeds and a lead foot).

Where is the coolant temp sensor located? I've changed these on Volvo 4 cylinder models, but the 6 cylinder is a new thing to me. Any way to test it?
      Thanks.

Some years had 2 ECT's. One, located by the thermostat, that sent signal to the dash gauge. A second, located at the rear of the engine near the firewall sent signals to the ECM. That means your dash gauge could be functioning correctly and everything looks normal, but the second ECT could be malfunctioning and giving you a rich mixture causing your mpg to take a dive. I'll have to research how to test it.

    The lead foot.....
If you drive hard enough you can probably get it down to 8-10 mpg!

Ding Ding Ding Ding we have a winner. Steve is right with these cars you have to keep the speed and rpms down. Limiting your speed to 65 mph depending on terrain, weather, winter/summer gas you can get between 26-29 mpg in a 960.
To better your mileage here are some suggestions.
      1. Alignment up to spec.
      2. Tire pressure 38 psi.
      3. Synthetic oils all around.
      4. Fresh plugs, air and fuel filters.

My 97 960 is used almost exclusively on the highway.
I run between Pittsburgh and Naples 1180 miles 3 to 4 times a year to see family. I have learned one thing speed kills fuel mileage in these cars.
I limit my speed to 65 mph maximum. The difference is if I run the speed limit in the 70 mph zones my gas mileage is around 25.5 mpg for the trip.
If limited to a maximum of 65 mph my mileage jumps to 27.5 to 28 mpg in the winter. In the summer the mileage runs between 28.5 to 29 mpg.

I will add after doing an Auto-Rx treatment on the car my gas mileage jumped about 1.5 mpg on the highway. Auto-Rx is a internal engine cleaner and it does work very well at cleaning out the sludge and carbon that has built up over the years.

"Auto-Rx is a internal engine cleaner and it does work very well at cleaning out the sludge and carbon that has built up over the years."

Is this similar to Lubro-Moly Motor Clean? Have you used Auro-RX in your car and could you tell a difference in performance afterwards? Thanks!

When I bought my 960 with 66K on it I ran a Auto-Rx treatment through it. Yes I saw a difference in smoothness and fuel mileage. The engine had a rumble at idle and that went away with the Auto-Rx treatment. My fuel mileage also jumped about 1-1.5 mpg. I figured it freed up some stuck or sticking piston rings.
It also cleaned up my cam and lifter area pretty well. It was coated with a Hershey chocolate colored coating of varnish. That area after the Auto-Rx is now the color of a brand new penny. A nice bright copper color.

No two different chemistry's and uses. Auto-Rx is a metal cleaner that dissolves the sludge and carbon build up in your engine and deposits it in your oil filter. Very safe for your engine since there is no harsh chemicals being used that could damage your seals. One of the biggest killers to gas mileage and engine power is stuck piston rings. If they are carboned up and can't move you are not getting a good seal between the piston and the cylinder. Auto-Rx will dissolve that carbon build up and free the rings up. It will not fix any cylinder damage that has already occurred. By cleaning the sludge out of the oil galleys it also improves the oil flow and in most cases the oil temperature runs a little cooler. You can go over to bobistheoilguy.com and peruse the forums under oil additives and there is a lot of posts on Auto-Rx.

        Excellent response, Al.

Although my speeds (with CC on) are right in the 65mph range (I try to keep the tach at 2100 or thereabouts), the mileage is no better than 23-24mpg.

Thanks also to the other responders.
