5spd options for 122s? 120-130

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has put a 5spd in their 122s? Impossible? More specifically a 1967? Is it worth it? Has it been discussed before on here, website about it?

Thanks again!
-Kurt

Have you been watching?
Standard way is to install an M41 OD tranny. They work great and are available.
Others have put in fancier trannies for a lot more work and money.

shortening the drive shaft and replacing the 4 speed with an overdrive transmission is the easiest way to go, in my opinion. i did the operation on my 122, and it was a major, major improvement. not that expensive either. you can pick up a j-type overdrive transmission for a couple hundred bucks, find a good machinist to chop and reweld the drive shaft, and you're good to go. OD drops the revs substantially, saving you gas, or alternately, allowing you to cruise faster on the freeways. of course, once you get up to 70 or 80, you'll begin to notice that the 122 isn't super aerodynamic, i.e. wind noise.

have fun,

floyd r.

There are several people offering very reasonably priced adapters to replace the M40/M41 with a Mustang T-5. They can handle more power, but require a lot more fabrication, so it depends on what you want.

I know that Dale (245gti) is now offering a T5 adapter for sale for the B18/B20 - his website is http://www.avalancheperformance.com/index.htm
They are not listed yet as he's just started to make them and is giving the website a facelift.
Contact him for details.

Thanks for the plug Craig. We have a number of T5 adapters being machined as we speak. We'll have 3 different options. We have the straight M41 to T5. We'll also have the M46 to T5 which will allow on to mount the T5 in two positions; one with the engine tilted and one with the engine standing upright. This option may be of interest to the crowd looking to put a B23/230 straight up in a 120 or 140 series car.

Another note of interest. Our M46 T5 adapter will require no machining of the bellhousing and will allow the user to continue with the M46 throw-out bearing and clutch fork. More on these when we can take some pictures and get them uploaded to the new website.

Do you do an adapter plate for the Ford T9 gearbox to Volvo M40/41 in a 142? These are the gearboxes used in European Sierra's and also some US cars as well I gather.

Might want to use an S-10 trans cover for a 120? Otherwise, you'll need to do some major sheetmetal work and put in a 140 or 1800 trans tunnel for the remote shifter.

I recall reading somewhere that an M-40 equipped 122 will require widening the tunnel for a T-5. Apparently the BW-35 equipped cars got a wider tunnel on the assembly line. The M-40 is 9" across. The T-5 is 13". Haven't done it yet, just studying up on it. ;-)

I can say with certainty that the T5 fits into a 240 *perfectly*. Like it was meant to go there.
