B23F - Overheated now plugs are wet 200 1983

How likely is coolant temp sensor to ECU failure after an overheating episode? My '83 B23F suffered a major overheating after top rad hose split (before I bought it). I got it to start yesterday after replacing distributor cap and rotor and a thorough spark plug cleaning and regap, however, only for a few seconds. It ran briefly and very rough, then would not restart at all. Plugs are once again very wet and smell of gas.
I plan this weekend to take a look at the timing belt and the fuel pressure regulator for problems. I was told by the previous owner that it ran great before overheating, so could that point to the coolant temp sensor as a culprit for flooding since it is mounted on the block and would have have gotten pretty hot during overheating and loss of coolant?
Thanks, Jim

Did advanced search, found related posts 200 1983

    Thanks guys,
I'm pretty new to the Board and should have done a more thorough search before posting. I found a good no start checklist posted by Fitzfitzgerald that I will refer to to check compression and possible blown head gasket. So, I'm off to pick up a compression tester ... this is a great site!

I would think that if it got that hot, you may have head gasket or cylinder head issues. You should get a few more opinions, but I'll bet you end up with a resurfaced head.

      Hi Bill,
Believe me, I realize that a head resurface is a strong possibility and was prepared for that when I bought this car. I still could not have passed it up (great price, low miles, clean unrusted body). But I thought it might be worthwhile to go ahead and try to get it running before tearing into the head project.

May I recommend a compression check? If the HG is toast and leaking between cylinders, the compression test will catch it quite easily.
