1986 240 is it ok to go from 10w 30 to 5w 40 200

hi quick question

i have been running mobil one 10w-30 since I bought my brick 120,000 miles to now 190,000 miles and changes oil about every 5,0000 miles or less

now I would like to change to shell rotella fully synthetic 5w-40

my car has no current leaks and does not burn oil

will this change do any harm... north carolina climate

or should I just stick with what I have been doing.

I have been using the rotella in the other cars a 1996 volvo 960 and a 1997 chevy 454 suburban...

thanks for any feedback

patrick

    perfectly OK 200

You'll have no worries at all with 5W-40. The engine will start easily and have good protection when warmed up. Volvo approved synthetic oils in the late seventies, for use in all of their engines.

i like mobil 1 15w 50, with higher miles i think its a good idea to use thicker oil, my friend has a new ford explorer v8 (2007) and it takes 0w 20 , it has 15,000 miles on it and with that oil the engine is banging like hell, same thing with my uncles new toyota sienna ha ha ha , my point is thicker oil is better. this lady in my neighborhood was complaining about her engine being noisy after she got her oil changed by a "gas station" so i put a half a cup in , of mobil 1 the 15 50 that i had left over the engine quieted right down , so draw your own conclusion

Something that I have been doing for years on old cars with great success. I make my own synthetic blend, 1 quart of full synthetic and the rest, regular oil. You get super cleaning from that 1 quart of synthetic along with it's superior lubrication properties, but none of the problems of running completely synthetic, such as increased leaking and so forth. My 82 Supra engine, at 230K looked like brand new inside when I removed the valve cover after feeding it this way for 100k ( I got it with 130k already on it).

Here is a lesson about oil weights 200

10W or 5W or 20W is the the winter weight which is so many drops per second at 0 degress the second number 10,20,30,40, are the numbers that oil thins out to so a 5W-40 would start great in cold weather and thin to a 40 which is a little thicker viscocity than a 30 hope this helps

Thanks for the information on weights. I decided to stick with 10w-30 mobil one like I had been using since I know it is great stuff and I had now leaks with it and when I went to walmarx they were sold out of the shell rotella anyway --- at wal marx they had a quart bottle of mobil one and not the normal 4 quart one I had seen in the past for 22.99 and the rotella would have been 18 bucks for 4 quarts so I would not have saved money anyway.

      thanks for your help

    Patrick,

I have no personal experience with synthetic oil, but I have been reading the postings of great minds on this Brickborad since it's inception and the advice on the question of switching to synthetic oil has always been NO! The synthetic cleans the engine so well that it will cause leaks in an engine that has not used it from very low mileage.

I recently bought an 86 240 with 160K on the clock. It had this little goose pimple of a Frahm filter and some kind of Jiffy Lube parafin smelling junk in it. I thought it had some kind of piston slap when I bought it but after changing the oil to Mobil one 10W 40, and a Mobil one filter, it has calmed down and whatever was complaining has gone away, As far as I know the car has never seen synthetic oil. I currenly have the same one or two drips as I did before, but a much happier motor.
FWIW I have a 1999 Cavalier with 125,000 that has lived on synthetic since we got it from Enterprise. It has the odd leak here and there but still runs like scalded cat.
