Parts interchange: Seats, dash, instrument cluster, ECU, taillights 200 1989

I have recently acquired an 89 244, and will soon be heading off to some local junkyards in search of parts. I am looking for information concerning what years and models I should get the following items from:

Front seats. The upholstery fabric on my seats is in fairly good shape, but the frame of the drivers side back is twisted and broken, and the foam has come loose and shifted out of position in both seat backs. What year seats will fit in an 89?

Dash pad. Mine is badly cracked, faded, and has tape goo all over it from where the previous owner duct taped the broken glove box shut. What years can I use. How difficult is it to install?

Instrument cluster. Two problems here---the odometer doesn't work, and there is no tach. What years and models had a tach, which ones were big, which were small, and which will work in an 89? There may also be issues with the temperature gauge compensation circuit. I would like to buy a cluster with a tach, that is suitable for my car, and replace the odometer gear (if needed) and eliminate the compensation circuit before installing it. What year and model should I be looking for?

ECU. I discovered today, while doing something else, that my car has the dreaded pink label 561 ECU. What number should I replace it with? What years and models are they found in?

Taillights. Mine are badly faded 19 year old originals. Are all of the big (80 and up) sedan taillights interchangeable, or will only certain years work in my car?

Thanks in advance

Pretty much any front seat will bolt in, though I think 1986 and up are more like yours.

Any 240 glove box will fit from 1981-up. Any 1981-89 dash will fit... not sure about the airbag models... "maybe". :-)

Any 1981-up tail lights will fit.

The ECU: you want a white label -561 or a -951. These are most likely found in the latest 240's, an oddball Bosch non-turbo 740 (most non-turbo's were Regina after 1989), later non-turbo Bosch 940 (read the FAQ on how to ID Bosch vs. Regina). You could also get lucky on eBay. ;-) Worth having a spare. I still have a pink label -561 in my 1990 240. Still works fine... but the '89's were more questionable, I think.

As for the tach, any 1981 and up tach will fit and work just fine... only difference through the years is cosmetic (matte vs. glossy finish). Plug and play. Not really model year specific. Might be a DL vs GL thing.

Compensation board bypass is fairly painless, I opted for IPD's kit for the simplicity, but Sven's Maintainers's 16-gauge lamp wire trick sounds pretty slick. For the odometer gear, get one out of the latest, low mileage car you can find. There's also the gear from odometergears.com. Pricey but better than any gear you'll get otherwise.

Good luck,
-Ryan

A note on the dash pad- I dont think that a dash from an airbag model will work for you. (All 240s after 1989, as I recall, had SRS.) The bottom of the dash cover on the driver's side is a bit different on the SRS models because of the addition of the knee bolster. SRS dashboards "end" just below the air vent on the driver's side, as far as the plastic/chrome strip, and the remainder from the trim down is covered by the knee bolster. On those without SRS, the foam/vinyl continues down below the vent all the way to where the felt underdash pad is.
