temp sensor in rad hose: upper or lower? 200

I got a temp sensor adaptor for the water temperature that you splice into the radiator hose. This lets you run an auxilliary guage for the dashboard. My question is should I put the sensor in the lower or the upper radiator hose?

(To my knowledge; the upper hose will reflect temps after the cooling effect of the radiator, and the lower hose will reflect temps that indicate temperatures after it has circulated in the hot engine.)

    Ah yes yes ofcourse! So where would you suggest reading the temperature; which is more crucial in your opinion?

      Upper would be better.... because that would be the closer to engine temp of the two, but the upper hose isn't necessarily loaded with coolant, so you might get some funky info, and likely no useful info until the engine is fully warmed up.

      Really the best measure for coolant temp, is to simply yank out the compensation board in the cluster, which will then liberate the stock gauge so it can give proper, real readings.

        bypass, and which hose to use 200

        I think Ryan has it right.

        Most importantly, if your original gauge is reading whacko and your 240 is '86 or later, you should do a temperature compensator board bypass. 99 percent of the time this will set things straight. You'll need about an hour, a screwdriver or two, a soldering iron, and a few inches of wire. Do some searches here or on google (site: brickboard.com) to find the procedure.

        Lower hose water has been cooled by rad.
        Upper hose - as previously pointed out - has hot water from engine HOWEVER this is only after it's warmed up and the thermostat has opened. Till then it reads the water that's been sitting in the hose since last shutdown.

    My response: You've got it backwards. The hotter water directly from(!) the engine (by way of the thermostat housing) enters the radiator through the upper/drivers side hose; the cooled water from the radiator returns to the engine (by way of the water pump) through the lower/passenger side hose.

    it`s the other way around, hot water go from the engine to the radiator via the upper hose from the thermostat housing.
