Motor Mount oil deflection trick seems to be working! 200 1986

Hello,

Finally reached time to change my synthetic motor oil and replaced that $6 piece of junk made in India mount on the passengers side of the car (installed another Meyle mount). I will post a picture later this week of what the $6 Motor mount looks like since installed in August (not good at all). Also checked up on a BB inspired experiment on the driver side mount.

Read BB conversations about stopping oil from degrading the rubber in the motor mounts. Decided the idea about putting tape on the motor mount before installing sounded like a good idea so tried it one installed in September 2007. Used a good grade electrical tape (3M) and put two full wraps on the surface of the part. That side of the car did have a steady power steering leak (just fixed) that went from being a couple of steady drips, to suddenly a bottle of fluid on Thursday of last week to get work and home. That leak spread a generous amount of fluid down that side of the engine. Under the tape the mount was still oil free!. Did not take the entire mount off, just removed a section of tape off the surface, inspected it, and replaced the tape.

On the new mount used on the passenger side, went a step further and added two layers of tape on the top side with strips 90 degrees to each other. Then put two full wraps of tape down the side of the mount.

Plan to use the garbage bag trick when pulling the oil filter off. Next oil change will check up on condition of the tape and the mount. But have decent hopes that this will help extend the parts life.

Regards,

Paul

Motor Mount oil deflection trick seems to be working! 200 1986

    Paul, and all,

I got to looking at my motor mounts, and even though the car is low mileage, the mounts are 24 years old. Mine have gotten kind of Pudgy looking, so it's time to change them. I started checking prices, and they are all over the place, ranging from the $6.95 el-cheapo parts to the local Volvo dealership where they are $49.80 per each. I have decided to go with the Volvo OEM parts. It's about $100.00 plus tax, but the originals have lasted for 24 years, and I won't be around in 24 more (or at least probably won't be driving).

Do you think that it's worth the extra money for the OEM parts?

    Bill

You may want to try tin foil wrapped over the mount when you change your oil filter. Used it for years on an 1984 244 with great success.

      That would work,

I tape a trash bag under the filter so the oil pours into the bag when you screw the filter. Put it over the oil pressure sending unit, and tap it to the back of the Alt on one side and the block on the other side with wait for it.... duct tape. Then you just pull the bag open and break it loose with the filter wrench. It also acts as an insulator if I forget to take the negative terminal off.

Read that here on the BB a while back and it works like a charm.

The foil would work also, but see the part about forgetting to take the negative terminal off.

      Regards,

      Paul

Ok, I'm a bonehead. Why do you need to take the negative terminal off?

        (Really)

Because you can weld something like your oil filter wrench to the back of the alternator if you swing it over too far. That big red wire connects you right to the battery and your wrench is sitting on chassis.

That is the arch weld using 12 volt 80 Amp current merit badge.

I earned my merit badge changing a oil pressure sender, the socket wrench went a bit far when it broke loose.

Now I take that sucker off and reset the radio buttons every stinking time.

          Regards,

          Paul
