Sometimes easy start, sometimes hard. Crank Position Sensor? 200

Hi all,

I have a '90 245 w/230K. It runs great. However, the ease of starting it is not consistent. Sometimes, just the touch of the key. Other times, 2-3 attempts at 2-3 seconds each.

I was thinking Crank Position Sensor, and even ordered one since they're cheap. However, a recent thread about breaking the CPS bracket has scared me. So:

- is the CPS the culprit?
- are there any suggestions to avoid breaking the bracket during a change?

Thanks,

Monty

I'm the one who broke the cps bracket recently. Since then I've done one w/o a problem. My 1st one was frozen but I think that's rare.

As another gent suggested, twisting it out is the key. If it's tight, I find it easy to lower the trans and reach up with pliers but that's w/ the car on a lift. it's tough to reach down and turn at the same time - that's what broke my 1st one.

You didn't mention other conditions. If it's starting well cold but not after it sits warm for an hour or so, could be a leaking injector.

Also, check & clean contacts on the 25-AMP fuse by the battery and the fuses at the block; and check the fuel-pump relay.

I have been chasing the same problem for the last 2 months.Tonight the car did it's thing in not starting,What I can't figure is which one cause the problem.
The 25 AMP fuse on the drivers fender was wasted holder and fuse, this was a water prove unit the other was the fuel injection relay. The check engine light would come on sometimes but leave no code.I replaced both and now the car starts great,I changed the crank position sensor last week but that didn't help.
I hope that this helps out.

Check the OBD for codes, you will get a lack of signal for the CPS sensor if it is failing. Is the insulation failing at the sensor? Does it have a yellow band on the sensor wire? If either of these is yes replace it. Dan

I did my first CPS on my '89 last year. It came out easily. After the 10mm bolt is out I slowly twisted it instead of trying to yank straight up. It came out without issue.
A foot long extention with a Universal Joint on the socket helps a bunch to get at that Bolt.

Yes they are psuedo cheap, that's why I replaced mine...The insulation was torn on mine even though I was having no issue with it.

I would look at the fuel pressure regulator. If the diaphram is going bad, the gas may drift back toward the gas tank leaving the injectors dry for a bit.
How's your gas mileage? Bad mileage can point to the regulator too.
