what is the black sticky silly putty like substance 200

you find wrapped around wiring harness and such which is then stuck to the firewall or other anchoring parts.

this stuff never really hardens or dries out. i have found it securing wiring and fuel line hoses in trunks of wagons and sedans.

what is it called and where can i get the stuff?

OK so I was running a speaker wire behind the dash and it was dark and I unknowingly got this black goo all over the baby-blue seats of my

Any ideas on how to clean this stuff up?

The stuff used to seal windows is butyl rubber caulk, usually in a tube. The stuff Volvo uses to secure wiring harnesses, hold carpets in place and all sorts of other things, has a friendlier consistency in my opinion, but is still polybutylene. I've noticed sometimes it still has a paper cover on it. I found exactly this stuff at my local auto paint store. It's 3m's Window-Weld Ribbon Sealer Auto Glass Replacement Kit. Comes in several sizes. I use PN 08611 which is 5/16". Comes in a 15 foot roll.

I think my 86 245DL is held together with that stuff.

The wife says you have black stuff all over your hands, you look down and say, that's just butyl honey.

Is it the same stuff that is used to hold and seal the windshield? If so it's probably butyl rubber.

You can find flat rolls of it in Home Depot in the caulking section. Used for window glazing. The heavier stuff for windshields is made by 3M.

To me it looks like neoprene cement. When that is dry it looks and feels just like that.

don't know what volvo used. but i think the noncuring kind of fire retardant putty would work the same way.
