Which Thermostat ( Temp & Brand) ?? 700 1988

Hello . 1988 740GLE wagon Auto AW70L tranny. Am in central New Jersey where the coldest it gets is about zero degrees F and the hottest it gets is about 100 degrees F. Question is : what temperature thermostat should I use ? 82, 87, or 92 degree ? Which brand(Vernet, Wahler, ?). Will probably get from FCP Groton. Also final question : I have not put in a thermostat in ages. If I recall it should be orientated a certain way. Which way is this ? Thanks so much and I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

I installed a vernet 87 degree thermostat in my 88 760 Turbo Wagon without any problems. My temp gauge sits right in the middle. My previous 20 years of driving water cooled VW's taught me that about 86 Degrees was plenty warm.

I just did this a few days ago (and bungled it the first time!), so I hope I can help you out. My Volvo is a '87 GLE sedan.

I bought a 92 degree thermostat after reading some archived posts. It seems that the consensus is that an 87 degree thermostat is for turbos. I bought the Vernet from FCP Groton.

I took off the thermostat housing and noticed that the recessed spring part faced inside the engine block. That's how I put it back in. Remember to fit the gasket on the little lip on the thermostat (look at the old one to see what I mean). And, thanks to the BB, I can say with authority that no gasket sealer is needed. :)

The little loose rivet in the edge of the thermostat housing needs to pointing up - it's an air hole, so the engine can burp any air that might get caught in the engine.

Remember to squeeze those hoses to burp the air out!

I can say from experience: If the thermostat housing begins to steam, then you need to make sure the gasket is on right. :)

    Ari

There is a huge debate here over 87 vs 92 degree thermostats. From what I understand, your car will run about the same with both (possibly slightly better MPG with the 92) unless you happen to live in a very extreme climate where the differences will be noticeable.

I replaced my 87 740 GLE's thermostat with a 92 degree one as per the Volvo manual and have had no problems.
