Top end Strut Tower warp 200

about 6 nights ago i was forced to make a drastic lane change due to a little ford ranger pulling into the wrong turn lane--- blah blah - anyway, the motion caused me to hit a curb!
The alignment was awkward before but now it rides damn perfectly straight YET the steering wheel is held 10-15 degrees to the left. I let go of the wheel it it maintains this geometry...

Yesterday i noticed that the brass cresent is lifted from the strut tower about 3mm on either end... what caused this?

Tim

I took pictures but i do not know how they are posted...

    Found it 200

Took it to a open parking lot and did a few narrow slow speed turn in forward an reverse to listen for noise - none
Tires made a huge donut mark on pavement - crawled under car...

Broken Passenger Sway Bar End Link
Warped/Bent Outer portion of Control Arm

This is very conducive to where the Strut Tower warpage is (i.e. in the front half)

So now i'm looking at a new Control arm, Ebay $70, VLVWorld $125, IPD (none), FCP $75 --- Seeing a lot of Scan Tech crap.

Hey John Rell, if you pass thru this, i'm still interested in that M47 Flywheel ya got (allows CPS)

On a lighter note, last night my girlfriend bought herself a black 93 850GLT for $4000 cash...

If by John Rell, you mean John Orrell aka. "jorrell", I still have the flywheel if your are interested. It is a stock original out of a B230F / M47 92 combo with 236K miles on it. If interested, let me know off-line at jorrell245@yahoo.com.

ps. Good find on the bent stuff!

If the outer tie rod is straight on that side but when you go over a bump and the car steers into it, the inner tie rod is probably bent. Ran into this with our PO damaged 90 244. Beyond that, check the four cross member mounting bolts that tie the cross member to the frame rails on both sides (2 per end). If the cross member has damage around the bolts or the frame rails have tweaked to the point where the paint cracked, you have a frame jig in your future.

Please note, 10 to 15 degrees on the wheel is significant, so if it is a tie rod, you should see significant inner or outer edge tire wear very quickly.

At a minimum, have the car aligned as that will tell you how far things are "off".

It is pretty difficult (though by no means impossible) to bend the strut tower. Inspect very carefully the area around the mounting bolts, looking in particular for stress induced cracks in the paint.

It is not unusual for the crescent shaped plate (not actually brass, but plated with a gold colored coating) not to be touching at the ends. It may well have been like that all along, you just never noticed it before.

I suspect you bent a tie rod, as that would put the steering wheel off center, but the car would still track more or less normally. If you had bent the control arm, it would likely have a strong pull to one side, which you did not mention.

It would also be a good idea to take a close look at the wheel and tire that hit the curb. Look for bubbles in the sidewall that would indicate internal damage. If you don't notice any new vibrations, the wheel is likely OK.

I bent a control arm on a 164 during a brief off-road excursion involving a drop down a 6' bank into a farmer's field. I was in high school and I discovered that bricks can indeed fly. My steering was about 30 degrees off after that incident.

The top of the strut tower can get pounded upward. I think IPD sells a reinforcement plate that installs from the bottom. You should definetely give your entire front end a good looking over--you could have a bent strut, bent control arm, damaged rear bushing or bushing housing.
