Replacing a timing belt on a ’87 240 and useful hints! 200 1987

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I ‘m trying to get a 240 up and running for my daughter to drive (I have all my kids drive them) and have run into a problem with this one. I pulled everything apart but forgot to initially line up the crank top dead center (been a while since I’ve done this). I was mostly concerned with taking care of the oil pouring out all over my drive. Anyway, I figured I’d just line up all the marks and make sure they match the marks on the belt. Did that and put everything together. Now she tells me it idles fine but has no power. Ran fine before I started working on it.

Do you think I could just be off a tooth on the belt? Could the crank be off 180 degrees like some have mentioned and still idle? Please, any suggestions….

Now the tricks I used to get around the special tools...

To hold the crank pulley I simply stuff a rag or towel between the alternator belts and the crank pulley before loosening any of the belts. It gets wedged between the crank pulley and the alt belt when turning the crank pulley bolt. Crank won’t turn, break loose the bolt, pull out the rag, and go along your way.

To seat the crank seal a plumber cut me a piece of PVC pipe exactly the diameter of the seal. I suppose the PVC can be found at any hardware or plumbing supply place. Smooth the edges of the PVC as to not damage the seal and gently tap around it over the seal to seat the seal.

Please don’t laugh if these suggestions are old hat to you. I have been on the board in a while. And again, thanks for any suggestions to get this young-un to stop naggin me.

This is a really good diagram on proper alignment.

Crank at top dead center on compression stroke. If the crank pulley has not started to slip use the mark on it and the belt cover.

At that point the mark on the cam pulley should line up with the mark on the timing cover.

When the cam and crank are in the correct position the rotor should point at #1 plug wire. There should be a scribed line on the top edge of the distributor housing that the rotor is pointing at.
