Power Windows Inoperative 200 1977

Hi,

I just installed the Gas Actuated Thermometer probe into my engine (finally), and the power windows won't operate. I looked in my green book, but there is no listing for window lifts in the "Fuses" section for 1977. I have no data to go on due to a lack of diagrams and information. Where should I start? All the windows do not operate, including the rears. I would enjoy a repair because the fronts are completely down and I have to attend class this afternoon. There are a lot of transients about were I usually park, and it's not that I don't trust them, but I do get concerned after they get a hold of some mouthwash.

Try one of these,

Twist the fuses around so you can see the strip and look for one that is thin or tapered. That is how they open up sometimes. Also you may see a flat out open space in one of them.

Or if you have one take a ohmmeter and check for zero ohms across the fuses. Avoid putting the Neg lead to ground unless you have another fuse for the VOM when reading resistance. There is 12 volts on the unswitched fuses. Safe to measure ohms if you keep across the fuses.

Poor mans way to test a fuse is to take a 12 volt light like out of a console switch and tie one side to the chassis. put the ingnition in II or crank the car up and then touch the other lead the left side of the fuses and then the right. When the light does not come on, you have your blown fuse or open circuit.

And the really lazy way to do it is to take a new white fuse and start popping one out and checking, put the one that came out in the next spot, and keep going until it works. You can skip the red and blue most likely.

If none of those do the trick you may have an issue with a ground or something electrical going on. Try the list above first.

Good Luck,

Paul

I dont have a 77 240 diagram.

The 1986 240 diagram says that when you turn on the igntion, a relay is activated, and that all the windows' power goes through its contacts. The power to the relay coil is carried by a blue/yellow wire (Fuse 12). The power to the windows (through the relay contacts) does not go through the ignition switch. It is carried by a brown wire (Fuse 10). IF the fuses are OK, A bad ground to the relay could also be the problem, as could a burned-out coil. On 80s and 90s models, the relay is behind the center panel, clipped to the crossbar below the dash. Hrd to get to. Hope the helps.
