86 740 turbo - starts when starter is jumped, not with key though 700 1986

Hi All,

I've been having a real fun time with my 740. Basically after a month of troubleshooting and slowly replacing parts, it came down to an ignition switch failure, which has now been corrected.

The weird thing is, the starter would turn over the whole time, but no power to anything else.

Now, the key in the ON position, bridging the starter with a screwdriver, the car will start and run fine. However, using the key to turn to the "start" position, cuts power to the whole ignition/fuel system, but still cranks the starter...there is just no spark or fuel.

What would this indicate? the things I've replaced so far:
coil
hall sensor
powerstage
fuel pump relay
wiring harness
ignition switch.

So, can anyone help me, or do I have to resort to installing a "Start button"? :)

Thanks in advance.

I'd do a start button myself. If it's good enough for a Bugatti Veyron it's good enough for my Volvo 740! :D

See if you lose +12V at fuse 12 and 13 when you go to start position
    with the ignition switch.
There's a Blue/Red wire from the ignition switch to those fuses.
Was that a new ignition switch or from the bone yard?

The answer to both of your questions is yes. Fuses 12/13 lose power in "start" and the switch is from the boneyard.

This second question prompted me to take a closer look and it appears that the two switches have different part numbers, but they both fit. Damn. Don't I feel like a tool now? Could this be it? I'm assuming that's a dumb question, but if it works in the "on" position, should it not work in start as well?

There you go. two bad switches it looks like. When you lose power to those
fuses the fuel Injection system is dead.
        Junkyard switches are an adventure.

Get the volvo green book , wiring and fault tracing
It will take much of the guesswork misery out of troubleshooting.
