Delayed Ignition Failure after Hot Soak 900 1995

1995 960: Engine will not crank after 10 minutes following shutdown. It will crank up to the 10 minute mark. Failure will last for 20-25 minutes after which it will crank as normal. Now here's the quirky part. The problem is consistent if engine shutdown immediately follows road driving. If the engine is allowed to idle for 8-10 minutes prior to shutdown, ignition failure does not occur. The mechanic's diagnostic analysis resulted in no problems (ie. crankshaft and camshaft sensors, fuel pump and fuel system relays, etc.) The computer was also switched out. Daytime temperatures in this area have been ranging from 45-70 degrees. Just a 10 minute drive will produce symptom.

You say it is a no crank after driving it and letting it sit for 10 minutes, has anyone verified that you are getting current to the starter when it duplicates this no-crank condition?

So it will crank but not fire up, had this once on mine and it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator, was leaking fuel into the manifold and causing a rich mixture, too rich for a normal start. When this happens, try pulling the vacuum hose of the regulator and look for raw fuel in the hose.

My bust. Poor choice of words. Engine cranks fine. It just doesn't start.

Another possibility is that the PNP switch is bad, neutral safety switch.
Next time it happens, put the ignition key and turn to release the gear shift lock, place foot on brake pedal and move the gear selector thru the range of gears, back and forth about 20-30 times. Then try to restart. If it does you will know the problem.
