Who sells remaniufactured engines for these cars at the best price? 700

Hey,

As I gradually tighten up this old car (1990 740 GL) I'm thinking I'd like to keep her for a lot longer. The chassis is solid. But with 227k miles, the engine is tired. I'm wondering about an engine swap.

I'd like to just buy a reman'd engine and drop it in over a couple of weekends. Maybe a reman'd tranny at the same time.I am wondering if there's a commonly accepted 'these guys are the BEST' supplier for this sort of thing. And what the likely costs are.

I know a lot of people would just scrap a car whose BlueBook market value is below 2K when it comes time for a new engine. I don't think that way. If I can get another decade of use out of a car for a couple thousand dollars and a weekend's worth of work (albeit HARD work), then I don't care what KBB says. Cars aren't investments, they are expenses.

thanks in advance

Thaddeus

I'd also give serious consideration to taking a used engine to a local remaufacturer or speed shop. Yes, it may cost a bit more, but you'll have options for extras like 3 angle valve grind, different cam, porting and polishing, etc. I'm not suggesting that you'll get huge gains in hp and I wouldn't try anything very trick, but since you're replacing the engine anyway...

As someone else noted, check your compression. These aren't Chevy engines. If well cared for, they last a long time. It's not uncommon to have spec compression with 200K -300K miles or more on them.

    Good luck.

What are the symptoms of your tired engine - low compression in one or more cylinders?

Be on the lookout for a low mileage "late model" 940 engine and you will likely get one with oil squirters under the pistons. I believe it would be labelled as an "L" block vs your current "K" engine?? Set it in the back of your garage until you really need it.

I agree, low miles motor from a reputable salvage outfit, something out of a 92-ish model or newer by preference. $500 will get a decent runner, a grand will get a truly low mile motor. Stick a set of rod bearings in on principle, new gaskets all around, timing components, etc, and roll on.

Volvo does sell the motors still, but they are a bit much. I'd really rather an original in good condition.

Your best bet may be to look for a good used engine, from a wrecked low mileage car that was properly cared for. For example, I recently totalled my 88 745 with 140K on it. The engine was in great shape---it used about 1/2 quart of oil between changes (at the factory interval of 5K miles) and most of that was leakage. I'm not really offering this engine for sale, merely using it as an example of what is likely to be out there. Though I might listen to offers, I was planning to keep it as a spare for my next Volvo. If one really wanted to do it right, replacing the rod and main bearing shells (and of course all the oil seals etc.) while it was out of the car would give you an engine that was essentially as good as new.

Usually, you will find the engine in an automatic car to be in better shape, as they are rarely revved much over 3000 RPM. My car was originally an automatic, but I had converted it to a stick, which I MUCH prefer---more fun, and I regularly got nearly 30 MPG out of it. If you are going to the trouble of an engine swap, I highly recommend the manual transmission conversion at the same time. (if you can find the parts---something like 95% of 7 series cars were automatics)

You should be able to pick up a complete car with body damage that renders it uneconomic to fix for a few hundred bucks, assuming you can find one. That's a lot less than the price of a reman engine, and you get A LOT of other useful spare parts as a bonus if you have the time and a work space to strip a car completely. When you're done, it's easier than you might think to cut up the body shell into manageable size pieces with a Sawzall.

Toms in CT process a lot of wrecked volvo's, they usually sell the 230 engines on ebay for around $400.
