Protecting the motor mount .. 200

I now have my first 245, a 92. Have had 700/900 series all along.

Is there a way to effectively keep the oil off the motor mount while changing filter? I understand that oil on the mount can shorten it's life over time.

Thanks

Just put a rag over the mount. That's what I do.

I will add to the advice below that I actually like to pour about half a quart of oil into the filter before I put it on. This helps the car build up oil pressure quicker then it would other wise. (Makes the oil light go off a lot quicker.)

"Add four quarts of oil and start the engine. Watch the oil lamp extinguish. Shut the motor off.

Check the oil level and add oil if necessary. The level should be between the marks."

Source for that?

My Volvo B200, B230 TP 30871/1 Green book says...

"Capacity,
Incl. oil filter...............3.85 L (4.0 US qts)

EDIT: There's nothing wrong with topping off. But it's just not called for (or mentioned) in any Volvo manuals that I've seen. On that basis I'd advise anyone to go "by the book" on their first oil & filter change.

That's a very good question J. I'm glad that you asked it.

For me, as a rule, the most important factor of any operation is safety. The elimination of danger is paramount. Not only wise to protect yourself, but others as well. There are many instances of going wrong, and I hope that you will avoid every one. Safety is an investment of time and thought.

There is a way to operate not only quickly but efficiently and effectively as well. This is a story that only time can tell, and it is time that will teach you well.

First J, gather the tools that you will need:

1" box end wrench
Oil pan

You may raise the car if you wish, it makes the job easier but it is not essential. I like to leave the car on the ground, that way I get to grub.

There are three parts that I recommend you change at each service:

Oil filter
Drain Plug Crush Washer
Oil Filler Cap Seal

You can and should obtain these from the Volvo dealer, your favorite indy, or www.fcpgroton.com.
At the end, I shall post pictures of each item to avoid confusion.

Once you obtain five quarts of your preferred oil, the tools and parts, you are ready for action.

Withdraw the dipstick and remove the filler cap. Then loosen the oil filter. If the filter is tight, you may need an appropriate oil filter wrench. Place a rag under the filter and locate the oil pan under the car. Now, remove the filter.

Observe the old filter to insure that the gasket is not still attached to the engine. Installing a filter with two gaskets will make a mess of your property, your car, and your day.

Now, oil the new filter gasket and install the filter hand tight. Withdraw the rag.

Loosen the oil plug and then locate the oil pan appropriately. Withdraw the plug and remove the old copper crush washer, then install the new crush washer.

After draining replace the plug and tighten IMMEDIATELY. Do not install the plug hand tight, only to stop and solicit your girlfriend, watch television, or play the piano. Install the plug and withdraw the oil pan.

Add four quarts of oil and start the engine. Watch the oil lamp extinguish. Shut the motor off.

Check the oil level and add oil if necessary. The level should be between the marks.

Remove the old filler cap seal and discard. Install the oil cap with new oiled seal.

Now J, your operation is complete. You may now indulge your wild whims without worry.
