S90 Purchase S90-V90

Well I did it. I was mulling over a number of models and settled on a 1998 S90. 90,000M 150,000K. I posted earlier that i was walking away from this car because the owner in an email told me it was FWD. I went and checked it out anyway. Turns out it belonged to his 91 year old mother who only drove it to church and the shops. She recently passed on and he needed to move it. There is dealer history for the 1st 100,000 and then it was serviced at Swedishmotors in Toronto. I feel fairly confident i made a wise choice. A few niggly little repairs to do. Interior light switches are intermittent. passenger power mirror is not working and maybe the cruise control is not working might be operator error though. Came with winter set of brand new Gislaved Nords on Volvo rims too.
Wish me luck! As usual I appreciate any bad news you want to post.

    S90 Purchase - nice car S90-V90

Granny drove 10,000 miles per year, so she was covering more distance than just to church and the shops (unless she lived waaaay out in the boonies).

I agree with you on that one. My mom is one of those little old lady grand mothers. I was driving her 99 Park Ave over New Years and what I saw was 11,800 miles on the odometer. Which works out to 1388 miles per year. She got it in August of 99. Wouldn't touch that car if you gave it to me. Parked outside under cover 150 yards from the Gulf of Mexico.

Good buy, Kenner. Niggly little problems are what these cars specialize in. If you're a DIYer, this won't be a problem for you at all. My only suggestion is to take care of two possible car-killer problems:

    1. Make sure your timing belt/tensioner maintenance is up to date. One crappy tensioner and your engine is toast.

    2. make sure the radiator has been updated. These cars came from the factory with a weak radiator hose fitting ( the upper one). they have a history of failing massively and destroying cylinder heads in the process.

I suggest that you look through your previous owners' records and figure out if both these things have been done. the radiator you can replace in a couple of hours. the belt/rensioner however, you might want to call in a mechanic. Don't put these things off. Once they are fixed, this car will run reliably--just don't expect all your switches to always work. ;)

    Eric
