Hi all,
I know you all hate seeing posts along the lines of "my car makes a noise, what's wrong?", but I gotta give it a try. The car (84 245T) is sitting at my mechanics after he called me and said he couldn't figure out whats up.
Here's the rundown:
Loud rear end noise... sounds like the noise when lightly applying brakes with rusty rotors.
Occurs when at steady throttle or when decelerating. Diminishes when accelerate strongly.
Completely DISAPPEARS when brakes are applied.
So far, brakes have been totally checked and are A1. Center driveshaft bearing seems OK. Wheel bearings are fine. Rear diff oil is topped up and contains no metal shavings.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Where should we concentrate our search? I'm heading over there soon to run the car while on the hoist to see if we can pinpoint the location..... but worried we won't be able to recreate without load.
Car has been lowered by 1.5 coils and I haven't yet installed an adjustable panhard rod to center the rear end.
I've had suggestions that it sounds like a ring gear carrier bearing in the diff...
Thanks in advance, hope to get back on the road soon. I do love this car, so much more character than the econobox honda I'm driving in the meantime...
Cheers

Sounds like your pinion is pointing down since you cut the springs and lowereed the car. I would suggest that when you accelerate the vehicle the pinion rotates up enough to lessen the noise and also the same goes for when you apply the brakes, the pinion rotates upward to the point where the driveshaft angles are acceptable. IPD sells a set of adjustable control arms that I just so happen to use on my V8 conversion to adjust the pinion angle and I can tell you that they are the way to go to get your pinion angle where it needs to be to be quiet again. I can't guarantee that I have explained your problem, but at any rate, good luck.

I agree with Stickbuilder that your (now) offset rear end could well be a factor. But I don't think the situation is as dire as he suggests. My '80gle V8 (IPD lowering springs and rear offset left about an inch), gave me over 100,000 fun miles on it with no undue noises, pinion/u-joint problems, etc.
But I think "Center driveshaft bearing seems OK." isn't good enough. I would give it a good physical, and the rear u-joint too—since both ends of the rear shaft may be feeling some effect of the offset rear end. Maybe I was just lucky.

If you re-read his post, he does not say that he used lowering springs. What he said was that he cut 1 1/2 coils off his springs. If he did this at the progressive wound end, then there may be his problem. Cutting that much off the progressively wound end is the same as cutting up to 3 coils off the other end.

Hi all,
Thanks for the ideas thus far!
I am going to order an adjustable panhard rod and torque rods from IPD (which I was going to do eventually).
True lowering springs are certainly down the road. For the record, a PO cut the springs before I picked up the car last summer. I don't know how they were cut... I'll check that out when I get back to the car (at a friend's shop). I didn't realize 240's had stock progressively wound springs!
I've been driving it since with no problems, no noises. This is only a recent problem.
I will be doing some more investigating into the condition of the driveline and report back.
I appreciate all the help.
I've attached a link to a pic of the car. Its low, but not too crazy.
Cheers

Sounds like you have answered your own question. You stated that you had cut your coil springs by 1 1/2 coils. You may have changed the pinion angle to the point to where you are causing it to bind when the car is on it's wheels. When you unload the suspension, you relieve the situation. Try putting on a stock set of springs, and see if the problem does not go away. You may need to build a set of upper control arms that are adjustable to keep the pinion angle as it should be with the lowered springs. It's a lot of work, but if you want it in the weeds, that's the way to go. I do this operation when building a street rod, and included angles are a way of life. The drive shaft (and yours has a split shaft) needs to run at a preset angle to remain quiet. You may even be generating the noise from the center bearing too. Did you cut the spring at the Progressive wound end or the other end? The ideal thing is to buy aftermarket springs, so that you don't lose the progressiveness of the spring rates. Like my old Pappy used to say.....When you change it from stock standard, there will be problems.

Are you sure it's the rear diff? Weird for those to have problems. On the other hand, I've had parking brake shoes come apart and make all sorts of unusual scraping noise from the rear. I know you said your brakes were A-1, but have you checked the parking brake shoes?

Hmm...
Good thought! I'll go and check that out in a couple days when I can get back to the car.

Sounds like the pinion bearings, does it start making noise after a set speed, say 40mph on up.The one thing to check is to see if the pinion seal is leaking and if you can move the yoke from side to side are in and out,any play and it's bad,I would start with the pinion and go from there, anyway you look at this you have to take it apart.

Hey,
Noise happens right from low speed. At high speed I would say it is less noticeable, but I haven't really driven it much since it started.
The diff is dry though, no visible external leaks.
Would the pinion bearings go bad all of a sudden? Or more of a gradual decline?

It normally just starts all at one time. The one thing I need to ask is have you pulled the cover,Have you been doing burn outs.My son's 740 Turbo started making noise like this and he didn't tell me he had been doing burn outs,When I pulled the cover I found that one of the ring gear tooths was sheared off.
??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Ouch...
Nope, no burnouts for me!
Haven't pulled the cover yet, but that will be the next step.
Thanks
